THE 1941 MANOR HOUSE

As reproduced on a permanent site, this home will have reinforced concrete subfloors, both ground and second floor, supported by precast concrete joists. block concrete masonry walls, together with the concrete floors and cement asbestos shingles, will make this home durable and firesafe. Concrete roofs are firesafe and Pitched roofs are covered with cement-asbestos shingles or concrete tile, while the undersides of rafters are fire-protected with metal lath and Portland cement plaster. For flat roofs, any type of standard reinforced concrete construction is firesafe.

Sherrill E. Arvin started 17 years ago as a masonry contractor, building such structures as the Hoosier Airport and the Leonard Dry Cleaning Co., in addition to many others. In 1936 he and Mrs. Arvin saw the need for lowcost, durable homes in Indianapolis and decided to enter the residential field. Since that time they have built 35 to 40 homes each year at individual costs from $4000 to $20,000,

During the last five years, Mr. V. V., Ragsdale has worked with the Arvins as designer of the homes built by them and as superintendent of construction. Mrs. Arvin devotes her entire time to helping the home builder with his decoration problems. Because the construction office is in the Arvin residence, the home seeker may make appointments at any time to obtain building information. From display samples in the office he may construct his future home in miniature from the foundation to draperies for the interior.

In addition to the concrete homes ex- + hibited at this year's and earlier Home Shows, Mr. Arvin also builds residences of stone and frame for home-owners with every size of building budget. He employs from 30 to 35 men, each skilled in his own field of the building trades, and uses nothing but the finest quality materials, obtained from the dealers listed below. Several Arvin-planned homes are under construction now in Northdale Addition.

Mrs. Arvin has expanded her decorating service to include work for those families that are redecorating their homes, whether or not their residences are Arvin-built. Draperies may be made to order, by her own competent seamstress, to blend with wallpaper and rugs chosen by the owner with her assistance.

Co-operation of the Arvins and Mr. Ragsdale with home builders has resulted in nearly 200 of the residences which make Indianapolis known as “The City of Homes.”
