If this state is to pack about 4.950,000 cases of peeled tomatoes instead of the asual 3,000,000 rases then 15,000 acres of land will have to he found somewhere. There is talk the Government will let some of the land now restricted to conservation crops be used for tomatoes by reclassifying them as a non soildepleting crop.

hing factory capacity. the Indiana Canners Association, Indiana's 200 plants have been Operating at between 75 and 80 per cent of capacity. More machinery probably will be needed. And mu-| nitions plants have first call on new machinery nowadays. One of the industry's greatest problems is the fact that it uses much migratory labor. With employment rising, will there be enough tomato pickers available this year? The Government said it would be willing to pay more for these extra tomatoes—enough to pay farmers a premium of $2.75 to $3 a ton. But will farmers receive that bonus on Just the extra tomatoes or should it be spread over the whole crop? A cheerful spot in the picture is the fact that Indiana packs each season about 3,000,00 cases of chili Fauce, same amount of juice and 1,000,000 cases of tomato puree. Packers could put up more peeled tomatoes and less of these. there is a practical limit to even that.

According to

= n » INDIANA OWNS 228 square miles | of land. but isn’t credited with it |G because it is under Lake Michigan. | Even so, 86 square miles of Indiana is covered with water, according to the Census. And that doesn’t include all of it, the Census Bureau admits. River bottom lands that are flooded in spring, marshes and swamps, streams and canals less than oneeighth of a mile wide and ponds less than 40 acres in area are called “land” by the Census. Strangest item in the Census of Indiana’s land is that the state is larger than it was 10 years ago. In all, 180 square miles were added to bring the total to 36,281 square miles. This is due, says the Bureau, to better mapping and to classifying some small ponds, streams, etr., as land area instead of water.

London Gloom Disturbs Market but Decline Is Orderly. NEW YORK, April 19 (U. P.).—

Stocks made an irregular decline in light trading today with the indus-

i trial average setting a new low since

last. June 11. The recession was orderly in contrast with recent setbacks where steel shares featyred the drop. To-

: day steels were steadier and the

motors yielded only smail amounts. There were a few firm spots in rails, utilities and oils. Sentiment was disturbed by London dispatches stating that British newspapers were preparing tne public for a possible Allied defeat The Dow-Jones service said: “Realistic traders say the market has been discounting the

2 likelihood of an Allied reverse in

Greece with Hitler taking over there.” Bonds were irregular in dull turnover. Wheat, cotton, cocoa, cottonseed oil and pepper were easier. Coffee and rubber gained.
