FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 1941 There's Always an 'Eve’
Henry Fonda (the gentleman second from the right who has on a white coat, too) seems to be having a little waiter trouble and Barbara Stanwyck seems to be a little disgusted. The way we hear it is that Miss Stanwyck tripped Mr. Fonda, who in turn tumbled

Frances Gifford Suffers «14 Fates in Serial. By FREDERICK C. OTHMAN
United Press Hollywood Correspondent
HOLLYWOOD, April 18—In a permanent wave and a pair of buckskin shorts (which zippered up the front) Miss Frances Gifford today stepped into the shoes of Pearl White and Ruth Roland and became the first cinema serial queen in 25 years. It was movie-making at its wild-est-eyed—and most profitable—with Miss Gifford standing to earn her employers better than $1,000,000 by suffering 14 fates worse than death. In the 15th and final instalment she falls in the arms of Hero Tom Neal. Fadeout, with dead savages littering the countryside and the light of love kindling in Miss G’s big, blue eyes. It’s a Long Script
Five hard-working scenarists labored for months to produce a script about the size of the Manhattan telephone directory, which does these things to the badly bruised heroine: 1. Traps her in a flooded tunnel.

And we work so hard and so fast that we have to have two directors. While Director William Whitney is working one dav, Director Jack English is at home asleep. And so on, every other day. AROUND HOLLYWOOD, the filniland parrots are telling this gag about Preston Sturges, the director with the screwball hats: “I hear,” goes the story, “that for the next Sturges picture, the critics have agreed to mention the actors.” And so it goes with the fidgety guy who directed “The Lady Eve,” Col. Kenneth Collins’ current offering at the Indiana Theater. He's become just as big news as Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck, costars of “Eve.” Brother Sturges apparently has what it takes to make Hollywood roll over and be good. He was a playwright and scenarist (“Strictly

AND JUST TO PROVE this was no fluke, Cousin Sturges promptly put on another dippy hat and turned out “Christmas in July.” And now it’s “The Lady Eve.” In addition to all this bounding energy in a town where movie directors are paid to decorate swimming pools and quit bothering the studios, the cocky Preston finds time to operate a gourmets’ rendezvous, “The Player's Cafe,” and an engineering company turning out Diesel engines. ” 5 5 I HAVEN'T GOT the latest reports on how the affair finally came out, but when I last heard about it, the Sammy Kaye troupe was looking for a place to throw a party last night. It seems that Billy DeWolfe, the
comedian who spent all week convulsing Lyric audiences, agreed to imitate everybody in the cast and the performers were dying to see what they looked like in Billy's eves. He's the fellow, you know, who walks into a night club, ogles everyone and comes out with a brand-new flock of imitations. P. S.: He's registered for the draft in Boston and he expects to pick up a load of new material if and when he goes into the Army,

STUDENT QUEEN
ETHEL WATERS comes here next Thursday night in “Cabin in the Sky,” but if Ethel has her way it will be the last time you'll ever see the sultry songstress in a musical. Ethel says she isn't tired of swinging songs, or anything like that, but she wants to get established on the legitimate stage. In so many words, she's looking for another “Mamba’s Daughters,” the play that made her a firstrank dramatic star in a single night. It's hard to find, Ethel.

ALL IN ALL, it looks like a pretty good week for the downtowners, Ward Farrar at Loew's ought to have a very pleasant time with Chaplin's #The Great Dictator,” in at popular prices. . . Art Baker has “The Devil and Miss Jones,” a riotous takeoff on the labor situation starring Jean Arthur, Bob Cummings and Charles Coburn. . And everybody knows what will happen at the Lyric what with “The Boone County Jamboree” in full swing. . . . Happy days.
HOLLYWOOD, April 18 (U. P) — Donna Adams, who came to Holly- | wood four years ago from Dennison, a., for an education, has a movie contract with Metro-Goydwyn-Mayer.
