NEXT TIME YOU BUY walipaper—and that may be tomorrow, considering the popularity of wallpaper buying this spring—don’t baffle your dealer by walking in briskly and saying: “Well, what are your new spring fashions in wallpaper?” For aside from yearly ups and downs in the publics taste for certain colors, there isn’t any fashfon cycle and there are no fads in wall paper. The wallpaper you buy is too closely related to your home and your furniture, to certain basic principles of design and home decoration, for anyone to talk of fashions in wallpaper as he would mention fasions in hats or even furniture. There are trends in wallpaper, though, and there are definite progressive steps in its manufacture and design. For instance, this year and for the last vear or so, more and more people are choosing striped

striped design for the living room, a scenic paper for the hall— scenic to give the illusion of space in a small room—and a stylized or formal flowered design for the dining room. The dining room, incidentally, with its standardized furniture, can take more striking wallpaper than any other room in the house.

For instance a two-way ensemble in deep sepia is being shown—a subtle version of the

rose tones primarily popular this vear—which offers well-spaced and shaded stripes for the living room and a sprayv-and-leaf pattern for dining room or other adjoining room Also there is a bedroom ensemsble of lightly striped paper to be used for two or three walls of a room with a vivid floral print for contrast on the remaining walls. The ensemble could be used to accent an unusual dressing table or as the background for a twinbed arrangement. It is shown in the turquoise shade, vying with rose for preference this Year, which is being used in the living room of the Home Show house designed by Leslie F. ' “*" & * HOWEVER, THERE IS one type of wall covering that is completely washable and as durable as your walls themselves. It's made of a heavily coated

canvas foundation, decorated with patterns and colors painted on in oil and is called WallTex. The clear colors on the material won't fade after even repeated washings and all kinds of marks can be scrubbed off. The wall covering is unusually resistant to scrapings or gougings by furniture. The canvas reinforces the plaster, thus preventing plaster cracks and concealing them even if they should occur. It actually strengthens and protects walls and makes a perfect base for any future painting. Among the papers offered is a striped pattern in a deep rose with lighter stripes in silver and gray or with a pearl gray background spaced with ivory and silver lines, Its companion to-bacco-leaf design may be chosen in deep peach or French gray, each accented with blue, or with gray leaves, Wall-Tex for living rooms and bedrooms comes in a dull finish indistinguishable from the softness of the finest wallpaper. each color heightened by the rich black of the designs. Chinese red, butter vellow and black on shining white make up a neat kitchen design. = ” x WHEN YOU ASK the dealer, “What kind of wallpaper should I have?” the chances are that he'll find out all he can about the size of vour rooms and the kind of furniture you fill them with before he commits hiniself. He'll be appiying some of the basic rules for wallpaper choice. Large, splashy designs go with large rooms—and small, neat designs with small rooms. Stripes add height to low-ceilinged rooms and darker paper on the ceiling makes it seem lower. One end of a long, narrow room can be brought in by papering it with a darker paper than the other walls. Color, too, can be used to enhance or subdue features of any room. Warm colors—ivory, yellow, rose, brown and red and grays with red tinges—are known as advancing colors and will make a room seem smaller. Blues, greens, violet and most grays are cool colors and will expand a room. Too, they are more restful to the eye and, for this reason, fit into a smaller room which would seem cluttered with more compelling paper as a background. An exception to this rule is the quality of vellow to diffuse and increase light in a small room without losing its warmth or richness. Increasingly designers are finding new uses for wallpaper or border designs. As trim for plain paper in living rooms that demand it, borders can even be used around windows and doors. New papers simulating the grain of wood paneling or the rough surface of “stippled” cement are being made. A properly shaded pa-

ATTICS GAN BE MADE INTO STORAGE SPACE

Attic space in many older homes | is unusable, even as storage space, because of the lack of a floor. Storage of trunks, furniture and other heavy objects on the ceiling joists is dangerous and may cause a sag in the ceiling of the room below. The cost of placing a rough flooring over at least part of the average attic is small, and in many cases this effectively solves the storage problem.

STOP DOWNSPOUT EROSION If downpours end above ground and the rainwater spills above grade, “splash blocks” should be used to keep the earth from being washed away.

SCREEN GUTTER TRASH A wire screen of either galvanized steel or copper fitted over the top of gutters will keep leaves or trash out of drain pipes and prevent stoppage.
