Housewife Spends Her Time Inside and Does Her | Own Planning.

The master's hand may sign the! contract that starts a new home, his dollars may finance its con-| I'struction, but unless she's an ex= ceptional lady the mistress wants plenty to do with its planning.

She argues: “My husband spends |a great portion of his time at his] business office. Sometimes I spend

'The 1941 Home' Promises New and Different Trends

S. E. Arvin

Spiral Staircase, Built-in Screens Are Just Samples.

“The 1941 Home,” will not disappoint those who, knowing that

Leslie Ayers designed it, will be looking for “the new and different.” The cinder block, two-story home, painted snow white, features builtin screens, several windows which give three direction views and a spiral staircase leading to the threebedroom, two-bathroom upstairs. Always a believer that the garden is a part of the home, Mr, Ayres has created a formal garden, an outdoor fireplace and spacious walks. Built by S. E. Arvin the “House of 1941” is described by the architect as “livable and palatable, representing no definite period.”

Built of Cinder Block

Constructed of cinder blocks the south side of the house consists of patterned masonry and corbeled

projections for plants and flowers |

The cinder blocks provide insulation against weather extremes as well as a lasting, efficient building material. Interior decorating for the house has been done by Miss Mary Agnes Darmody of the Sam L. Griffith Co., with the predominating color turquoise. The entire circular wall of the stairs and upper hall is covered in a horizontal stripe wall paper in tones of maroon, grey, silver. The bathroom off the hall repeats the tone of these colors by using maroon glass, grev walls, white venetian blinds and white woodwork. The southern exposure of the living room and solarium show the sc-

cent on turquoise, rose, white and | Turquoise carpet is used

WALKS MADE OF BRICK COLORFUL

Flagstone or Concrete Also Are Serviceable; Width Depends on Location. |

There are three materials from which serviceable attractive side-! walks can be made—flagstone, brick and concrete. i Flagstone lends itself well to walks of an informal nature. Brick walks are colorful, and the brick can | be laid in a variety of patterns.| Concrete walks are especially ap-| propriate in cold climates since they can easily be cleared of snow and if well built will withstand freezing and thawing. The width of the walk will depend upon its location and use. Main walks are usually four to five feet wide; rear yard or garden walks are from one and one-half to three feet wide. Flagstone walks may have a bed! of either sand or concrete. When | laid in sand, a four-inch gravel or | crushed - stone fill and a two-inch sand bed should be provided.

Bricks Need 3-Inch Bed

Stones one and one-half to two {inches thick should be used, and! they should be laid with joints from | three-quarter to two inches wide.! This type of walk is subject to dis- | placement by frosts. Flagstone set in concrete should have a six-inch gravel, cinder or crushed stone fill, a four-inch gravel concrete slab | and a one-inch mortar bed. t | Brick may be laid either flat or on | edge for walks. A three-inch con- | crete bed should be provided, and the brick should be laid in about! | an inch of sand, using sand for the | joints. | concrete slab should be laid on a| four-inch gravel, cinder or crushed! | stone fill to assure good drainage.

Concrete walks can be laid di-| {rectly on the earth if the soil is | | well drained. If not, a four or six- | inch base of cinders or gravel] should be used.

One wall of the guest room is entirely covered with white venetian blinds. In this room the modern furniture is used but an innovation in cabinet work is shown as Plastic is used. All kitchen and heating units are modern gas fixtures including a winter-air conditioning gas furnace, and a three bushel gas incinerator. The attached garage provides a large bay forming the hobby shop, storage space and—of special interest to children—an honest-to-good-ness play house that adults cannot ‘enter without stooping.
