Every day of the year the churches of Indianapolis extend to ALL a most cordial welcome. You may drop in for silent prayer, meditation or to attend one of the regularly scheduled services. Tomorrow in particular the churches urge your attendance in order that you may become more familiar with Christ's Resurrection —with the true significance of Easter and just what it means to your every day life.
You will be surprised how much better you will feel after listening to the impressive musical programs and the enlightening words of the sermons. You'll be pleased with the contentment and peace of mind that an hour in church can bring you. There is a church near you where you'll find a sincere welcome.
“LOVE WILL FIND A WAY”
—byREV. E. E. ALDRICH Roberts Park Methodist Church
During the last World War there appeared a poster which burned its way into the consciousness of all who saw it. In the center of the picture stood the Christ with outstretched arms. The prints of the nails were clearly seen in His hands, and a bright red splotch was on the left side of his garment. His wounds were deep and were bleeding again. The surrounding terrain was one of complete devastation. Here and there were ragged stumps which were once beautiful trees. At the left of the Christ was a boot and a part of a leg. At the right was an arm sticking up out of the ground. At His feet were two helmets, one an American with a hole in the very center, the other was a German-made helmet. There were tears in the eyes of the Christ. Below the picture was printed the words, “And I told them to love one another.”
Again on Easter, 1941, we face the same picture. Above the din of battle the Christ walks the battle fields of the world saying, “And I:told them to love one another.” Christ loved sufficiently to go to a. cross. He makes the same demands of His disciples today. “Except ye take up your cross and follow me ye cannot be my disciple.” The: background of Easter has always been and always will be the dark and drearsome cross of suffering and self-sacrifice. The spirit of infidelity which led to betrayal; the spirit of misunderstanding which led to dissensions among His followers; the spirit of selfishness on the part of the Church of His day; the spirit of irresponsibility on the part of those whose task it was to administer justice; all these and many others laid deep the foundation for Calvary. They made the cross an absolute necessity. But when this foundation was crowned by a cross of LOVE Easter was made possible. It had to come. .It was the one place where the law of science that “like produces like” broke down.. Out of the hate and the sin and the suffering of that first Friday LOVE found a way out.!
Those were terrible hours between the crucifixion of Friday and: the Resurrection on Easter morning. Men lost their high idealism and went back to the old paths, the paths from which Christ had called them. Today men are treading the old paths again. There is misunderstandings, selfishness, irresponsibility; betrayals of friendships is again digging deep the foundations on which man and nations are being crucified.
The world is looking for a nation or a church which will erect on’ this foundation another CROSS OF LOVE. This will guarantee another resurrection. Christ again will live and triumph over all his enemies. Easter will have a new meaning, the kind of meaning it had when Mary Magdalene broke into the hiding place of the disciples with the astounding news, “I have seen the Lord. He is living.” os
