“THAT NIGHT IN Directed by Irving Cummings. Notable particularly for the appearance of Miss Miranda, the Brazilian chanteuse, in a featured role. Mr. Ameche (a Broadwayite gone Latin) and Carmen are entertainers in a Rio nitery; Miss Faye 1s a Baroness, and there is a severe case of mistaken identity afoot. Meantime, Carmen and Ameche do considerable singing. “SCOTLAND YARD”—With Nancy Kelly, Edmund Gwenn, John Loder and Henry Wilcoxon. “ROAD TO ZANZIBAR"—With Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour, Una Merkel and Eric Blore. Directed by Victor Schertzinger. Bing and Bob are a couple of broke circus jerks trying to raise enough money to get out of Africa. They have a new promotion for every town they pass through. Una and Dorothy are stranded vaudevillians, also short of cash. Their racket is to induce a sucker to save Dotty from being sold on the slave block. The show's four tunes are "It's Always You,” “Birds of a Feather,” “You Lucky People, You” and “You're Dangerous.”

“MEN OF BOYS TOWN”—With Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney. Directed by Norman Taurog. Mr. Tracy resumes the role that won him the Academy Award. As the Rev. Fr. Flanagan, head of Boys Town, he exposes the cruelty existent in a reformatorv where Whitey (Mickey Rooney) is beaten and solves the financial difficulties of his Nebraska institution. “THE LONE WOLF TAKES A CHANCE"—With Warren William, June Storey, Henry Wilcoxon and Eric Blore., Directed by Sidney Salkow. Mr. William is the “Lone Wolf.” Mr. Blore is his valet. Between them they circumvent an unjust murder rap and save the life of the inventor of burglar-proof baggage car which emits poison gas.

TO A LESSER degree, perhaps, but the Coy Watson family may become to the movies like the Barrymore family once was to the stage. The Watsons may go on and on (though it is to be hoped none will reach the bacchanal heights attained by the Barrymore, John). Largest of the film families, the Watsons’ bounteous offspring were born on sacred movie ground, no more than half a reel from # . the old Mack Sennett lot and right next door to the honeymoon cottage of Wallace Beery and Gloria Swanson. For 25 years now Watsons have been introduced to the world at regular intervals until today there are nine of the little dears. Which is just an underhanded way of saying that Bobs, the youngest, will be back with us tomorrow when “Men of Boys Town,” with Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney, opens at Loew's

u n

BOBS IS BACK again as Peewee, the role he played in the first Boys Town picture. Nine years old, freckle-faced and chubby, Watson the Youngest started his film career adorned in diaper and safety pin. It was a short subject called “The Fisherman” and starring Chic Sale. Bobs portrayed Mr, Sale as a baby, fishing with a bent pin in a goldfish bowl. Bob's histrionic efforts were given a bit wider scope when, with Brother Delmar, he performed in “In Old Chicago.” biggest chance, however, came when Director Norman Taurog selected him for the first Boys Town movie and in the present one his part has been expanded into a leading supporting role. By way of background, the press releases say the Watson family is a sort of “closed corporation.” Earnings of all are poured into a common fund and all share equally. The children were sent to public schools and diligently protected from the scourge of Hollywood fame. “Working in pictures to Bobs is like doing his chores around the house,” Papa Watson explains. “I grew up on a farm, and milking cows was my task. Bobs grew up in Hollywood and playing in pictures is his natural job.” Director Taurog has this to say about the Watsons: “Whenever I have needed a regular kid, I have found that I could depend on the Watsons. Bobs, like his brothers, is fortunate never to have had an elocution lesson, or any dramatic training to remove his fresh boy=ish appeal.” But Bobs is serious about this movie business. “I want to be an actor like Mickey Rooney,” he confides,

it's only natural he'd be in movies.

THOSE REVIEWERS assigned to handle the Lyric's shows are offering up a little silent prayer that Sammy Kaye of the swing and sway won't again trap them into exposing their ungainliness on the stage. Mr. Kaye has a feature which he calls “Do You Want to Lead a Band?” The idea is that anyone from the audience can answer in the affirmative, take over the Kape baton and put the band through a number. Advance information on who was covering his show was given Mr. Kaye last, year and—by name—he called two cringing newspaper boys out of the audience. They were trapped into leading the band, meantime revealing reddened faces. It's a mean thing to happen to a member of a noble profession. n n un

THE WINDUP: Judging from box office returns at the Circle and Indiana, the Hollywood highups would do wise to up their musical schedules. “Road to Zanzibar,” with Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour, stays for a second week at the Indiana and “That Night in Rio,” with Carmen Miranda, Alice Faye and Don Ameche, will continue to exude Pan-Ametican goodwill at the Circle. Both musicals—both doing nicely, financially. One of the Lyrie's subjects starting tomorrow will be the first of a series entitled “So You Think You Know Music.” It's patterned on the radio show with the same name. Featured are such personalities as Col Lemuel Q. Stoopnagle, Jessica Dragonette and Hendrik Willem van Loon.
