received here indicates that | Hitler may try to bottle up the] British fleet in the Mediterranean | bv attacking Suez and Gibraltar, while shelving, for the time being, his plan to invade England. Such & switch in arrangements, it is | pointed out, would not necessarily involve Germany in a war with Turkey — something the Nazi General Staff is said to be anxious to avoid. Turkey could be isolated and left on the Axis’ flank while the Nazis occupied Egypt, E | am: Palestine, Syria, Mr. Simms Trans-Jordan and tl oil fields of Iraq. Turkey has said that she will not enter the war unless directly attacked, and Soviet Russia is not expected to do anything unless Germany attacks the Dardanelles, vital gateway to the Black Sea. Accordingly, military experts here say Hitler's present plan of campalgn may be, first, to take Salonika and Greece, thus encircling the Jugoslavs, then to launch a drive from Libya eastward across Egvpt, Rga nst Suez. This, of course, would be far from easy. It presupposes a lot of things. First of all, it would almost certainly mean the abandonment— probably for the rest of the spring and summer—of Hitler's hope of invading the British Isles. The Nazis would have to take over the Italian Fleet, especially the submarines which would be needed to bottle up the Adriatic and harass the British warships in the Medi$erranean. And a large, perhaps a major, part of the Nazi air force would have to be transferred to this Rrea.

Supply Line Would Be Long

Ttaly is still supposed to have left fwo or possibly three battleships, a dozen cruisers, some 65 destroyers and about 80 U-boats. Officered and manned largely by Germans and supported by Nazi bombers, this fleet might make it possible for Hitler to ferry across the narrower part of the Mediterranean sufficient men and material for an attack on Suez, For, it is observed, the British position would likewise be difficult— especially if their life line past Gibraltar were severed. Supplies would have to come from the United States, via South Africa and the Red Sea—some 11.000 or 12.000 miles; from Britain, bv a similarly long journey, and from Australia across the Indian Ocean, Along almost every mile of this distance they would be menaced by Nazi raiders And once in the narrow waters of the Red Sea, they would almost certainly be attacked by dive-bombers Near East Ts Lodestone

Should the Battle of the Balkans po the wav Hitler hopes, the next development might well be a Battle of the Nile—or, as Napoleon called his foray there, a Battle of the Pyramids Thence, should he emerge victor, he would likely try to proceed against the Kaiser's historic objective: Bagdad and the oil Felds of Mosul. Turkey would be surrounded but her territory might sti] I be intact There is many an “if” between the Yuehrer and anv of these goals. Nevertheless, it is known that Hitlar like the Kaiser and like Nanleon, has alwavs been fascinated yw the East. It seems to lure him as it did the others before him. And it may lead him, as it did them, to exile i id than to lasting glory.
