Catholics to Follow Way of Cross In Outdoor Service Good Friday

K. of C. Completes Program For Ancient Ritual at Obelisk Square.

By EMMA RIVERS MILNER

THE OUTDOOR settinggof the Catholic Way of the Crass Devotions assumes an added meaning in these times, In each of the corners of the Obelisk Square, where the Knights of Columbus have arranged for the devotions, stand two German field guns captured during the World War. The slender, 100-ft. obelisk, on the other hand, points steadfastly heavenward as if trying to offset the grim reminder of Christian nations at war. In this setting on Good Friday, thousands of the faithful and their guests will proceed from station to station retracing in spirit Christ's pathway to the Cross. Each station will be marked with a rude cross resembling that on which the Saviour died. To every one will be fastened a picture suggesting an episode in the crucifixion story. The first is entitled “Jesus Condemned to Death” and the last, the 14th, “Jesus Is Laid in the Sepulchre.”

"GOOD MUSIC" By Fremont Power Musical pedr that he is, nonetheless Arturo Toscanini must have a very common streak of good humor. For at 8:35 o'clock tonight, NBCBlue, he will direct the NBC Symphony Orchestra in a selection which is almost : . x wholly farcial.

It’s the overture |

from Rossini's comical opera, “Il ¥ e

Signor Bruschino.” The vio- E linists mark each measure by striking their bows on the music racks, one of the few opportunities for burlesque in symphonic literature. In a more serious vein there will be Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3 in A minor, known as the “Scotch Symphony” and two Berlioz’ works | —the “Queen Mab” love scene and scherzo from the dramatic symphony, “Romeo and Juliet,” and the popular Rakoczy march from “The| Damnation of Faust.”

The Sunday Evening Hour will present a singer who reached Met~ rovolitan Opera stardom without the benefit of training in Eurepe. She is Helen Traubel. one of the Met’s Wagnerian sopranos, Miss Traubel was soloist with the St. Louis Orchestra when Walter

Damrosch heard her. So impressed was he that he engaged her for the world premiere of his opera, “The Man Without a Country.” Without European assistance, she moved swiftly then to Metropolitan stardom. Her selections tomorrow evening, 8 o'clock, WFBM, will be the “Ritorna Vineitor” aria from Verdi's “Aida,” Schubert's “Ave Maria,” “The Palms” by Faure and “Loves Old Sweet Song” by Molloy. The Ford chorus will join in the latter. Fritz Reiner will be on the Detroit Orchestra’s podium, directing the | laying of the overture to Verdi's “The Sicilian Vespers,” the Salta= | rello from Mendelssohn's “Ttalian” Symphony, Dvergk’ s Slavonic Dance in A-flat and Smetena’s symphonie poem, “The Moldau.” un » The Kostelanetz-Spalding program at 3:30 m. tomorrow, WFBM, has been lengthened to 45 minutes and a l4-voice mixed chorus added to the cast. The solo= ists will be the Metropolitan soprano, Rose Bampton Violinist Spalding's offerings will be the Achron arrangement of “Liebestraum” and the Spanish Dance in A minor by Sarasate. Mr. Kostelanetz will direct the orchestra in Strauss’ “Emperor” waltz and several Stephen Foster melodies, among other selections.
