Silent on Appointment at Conference Attended By Minton.

Times Special WASHINGTON, April 3.—President Roosevelt remained noncom-| mital today regarding the long pre- |

dicted appointment of Senator] James F. Byrnes (D. S. C.) to the Supreme Court. When asked regarding it at a press conference the President said he still was waiting to name a successor to Justice James C. Reynolds, resigned. Former Senator Sherman Minton of Indiana attended the conference with Lowell Mellett, another Hoosier, both of whom are Presidential aids. There have been numerous suggestions that maybe Mr. Minton might be named in order to leave Senator Byrnes to provide leadership in any sharp Administration quarrels. But another alternative suggested has been the naming of Senator | Alben W. Barkley (D. Ky.), ma- { jority leader, and the shifting of the official leadership to Senator Byrnes.
