Singapore is the nut which the Japanese must crack if ever ambition of a hegemonv of the South Pacific is to be achieved. It has been heavily reinforced in recent weeks by arrival of strong Empire land forces and large quantities of Royal Air Force squadrons soine of them outfitted with American pianes. sabotage we could take the vessels for our own use under the World | War Espionage Act.” One section of the 1917 Espionage Act makes it unlawful for the owner or persons in command or the crew members of any vessel in United States territorial waters, to “willfully cause or permit the destruction or injury of such vessel.” Violation imakes the vessel subject to seizure {and forfeiture to the United States. | If convictions are obtained and ‘the ships are requisitioned, it was doubted here that any of the vessels would be turned over to the | British. It was believed more likelv that this Government would re- | lease American tonnage to Britain and, when repaired, use the Axis vessels itself. The Treasury has indicated the repairs may take a year. The President's meeting with Admiral Land was a prelude to a major conference at 2 p. m. (Indianapolis Time) with the so-called “war cabinet”—Secretary of State Cordell Hull, Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr.,, War Secretary Henry IL. Stimson, Navy Secretary “rank Knox and Harry HopKins— and the chiefs of armed forces. Mr. Roosevelt revealed yesterday that £1.080.000000 has already been allocated to Britain and Greece from the $7.000.000.000 war-aid ap- | propriation for production and pur[chase of weapons and food These orders would supplement aid now being given Britain and | Greece from existing Army and Navy stocks. An Agriculture Department spokesman said conversations were in progress concerning food for Britain, but that nothing definite has been decided.

Medical science has discovered several causes which lead to epileptic convulsions. but there still are many patients in whom the reason for the seizure Is unknown. By means of post mortem examinations of the brains of epileptics, Dr. Bruetsch has shown that in some cases the convulsions are caused by chronic rheumatism of the brain, which is a sequel of rheumatic fever RESET Rg
