found and some quarters believe that the only logical eventuality will be that the overseas ultimate consumer will be forced to aid in the financing of stocks which have been piling up because of “emergency” demand and the scarcity of shipping bottoms. Under the present system banks finance dealers as soon as the latter have presented bills of lading for the tin. Repayment to the bank is not made, however, until the metal is delivered at destined points and if these shipments are delayed the banks must wait long periods before making collections. At the same time, dealers profess that they are even less able to finance accumulated stocks, In the event of a blockade of M#a~ layan ports it is feared that a banking crisis might develop because o the large amount of “tin” paper the panks would be forced to hold by themselves, pending delivery

SEARS ‘GLAD TO PAY $32,000,000 TAXES

CHICAGO, March 25 (U. P= Sears, Roebuck & Co. today reported net sales for the fiscal vear ended Jan. 31, 1941 were $704,301,014, largest in the company's history, but net income shrank more than a mils lion dollars due to increased taxes. Sales were 14.1 per cent larger than those for the record year 1939, when they totaled $617 414 266. Net income for the fiscal year was $36,« 082668 equal to $632 a common share, after all charges and taxas, compared with $37,255 274, or $6.60 a share, in the preceding year. Provision for Federal excess profits taxes alone came to $7,335,000. Taxes, according to the company's annual report, rose from $18 548 160 in 1939 to $32,650,033 in 1040, “We have no complaint to make as to our taxes, heavy as they may appear,” the report said. “We are glad to be able to contribute such a sum toward our country's defense.”
