Mere Majority Will Pass St. Lawrence Project For ‘Defense.’
By CHARLES T. LUCEY Times Special Writer
WASHINGTON, March 24 (U. P.). —Success in the fight for Congressional acceptance of the St. Law‘rence hydroelectric power and navigation project will rest largely on President Roosevelt's prestige and on the degree to which the develop{ment can be “sold” as a defense need, a survey indicated today. The President’s strength in Congress seldom has been greater; with the Lend-Lease bill passed there is little opposition to appropriations to implement it. But the attempt to place the defense label on the
St. Lawrence project is meeting sharp attack.

Retail Sales Improve Most In Indiana’s Four Largest Cities
By ROGER BUDROW
FOUR INDIANA CITIES ARE RUNNING a fairly close race in the retail business this year. All of them, of course, are far ahead of last year. In fact, no major city in the state is behind last year’s sales thus far, according to Commerce Department figures. The cities are Ft. Wayne, South Bend, Indianapolis and Gary—and in that order. Of course sales in Indianapolis far exceed those in any of the other three but in the extent of their improvement over last year that is the way they
line up. Ft. Wayne's independent stores, DEMAND BEST
