Great Pitching Will Do It Again=Reds
‘Never Beat Yourself,’ That's Deacon's Motto
(Fifth in baseball clubs.)
By GEORGE KIRKSEY United Press Staff Correspondent TAMPA, Fla, March 21. — Rule No. 1 in Deacon Bill McKechnie's book of baseball commandments is: “Never beat yourself.” That's the secret of the success of {the world champion Reds. Twice in succession the Reds have climbed the golden stairs on [gilt-edge pitching and air-tight de|fense. In 1941 the Reds will bid to make it three in a row with the | same prescription. { The Reds, as always, are short on |power, but they proved in the Na- | tional League pennant race and the { World Series last year that great pitching can throttle long-range hit- | ters. The Reds are loaded with pitching Mid-March appraisals lead to the | belief that the Reds will have a | stronger ball club this season than {they did in 1940—with only one big { “If” tossed into the picture. The big | question mark concerns Ernie Loombardi’s sprained ankle, which he hurt last September. He was able {to catch only one game in the World [Series, and the winter's rest failed {to bring the ankle back to normal.
May Not Catch Opener
The first time Ernie put his full 220-pound pressure on the injured ankle in spring training, it col-
lapsed again. He has no better than |
fa 50-50 chance of being to catch the season opener, For insurance, the Reds rushed into the market and bought 34-year-old Johnny Riddle from the Yanks’ Kansas Citv farm. Riddle is a smart receiver but a light hitter Much responsibility will fall upon | his shoulders if Lombardi can't |eatch well over 100 games. The Reds’ pitching and defense is something to write Aunt Hattie {about. Picture a "big three” of Paul | Derringer, Bucky Walters and Gene Thompson, each a potential 20game winner. No other club can match that trio.
Battle for Assignments
ready
| Battling for the other places oi the staff are Johnny Vander Mee of double no-hit, no-run fame: Bob Logan, a left-hander up from Indianapoiis where he won 18 games; Witt Guise, another lefty; Big John Hutchings, who is being brought along slowly, and Elmer Riddle, {brother of the Reds’ new catcher. { Derringer, Walters and Thompson won 58 games last vear and barring a mishap theyll be in the same neighborhood again. Thompson accounted for 16 of those victories and likely would have made it 20 but for a spike wound suffered during the Coscarart-Frey fight in Brooklyn. Whitey Moore seems to be the boy to watch. He may arrive this season. Pearson has shown no trace of his shoulder ailment and McKechnie is high on him. Vander Meer's curse is lack of control. If and when he curbs his wildness, he'll be a major league star again. The Reds’ only other possible question mark is at shortstop. DurIng the winter the Reds traded Billy Myers to the Cubs for Outfielder Jimmy Gleason and Shortstop Bobby Mattick. Eddie Joost. who played 75 games at short last season, is slated to take ever Mvers' job. Mattick and Pep Young of Pittsburgh will be hanging around “Just in case” he faMs short of expectations.
Great Defensive Strength
Elsewhere in the infield, Frank McCormick will be back at first, Lonnie Frey at second and Bill Werber at third. It is doubtful if any othe. National League club has as much defensive strength in the infield. Gleeson, the league’s sixth ranking hitter last season with an average of 310, will put more punch in the Reds’ attack and will improve their outfield. Ival Goodman's ailing throwing arm is rounding into form slowly, but he is expected to be ready to play when the curtain rises

was playing Tolleston, squeezed in next to Froebel's Coach Henry
s0 he just Mantz. The Blue Devils held a slim onepoint lead when Ralph sat down, but in the second quarter they pulled away to win handily. Since then, Ralph had the same seat at every Froebel game. In all probability Ralph will sit next to Mantz when Froebel goes against Madison in the opening game at the Fieldhouse tomorrow afternoon. And he'll probably be holding two pennies. One penny he found during the Tolleston game when it rolled in front of the bench, the other at the Hammond Civic Center last Saturday night during the South Bend Central game, Remember the Other Vaughn? Says Coach Mantz: “Darn if the kid and I didn’t see the penny just as Minor was about to make that game-winning bucket of his in the last three minutes of play. You should have seen the kid grab it Maybe there is something to having young Ralph around. After all, a namesake was very effective for Frankfort a few years back. Froebel fans believe there's at least one other factor besides young Mr. Vaughn in their favor. Since the setup of the four-week elimination where four semifinals sidetrack all but four teams from the State tournament trail, the northwestern Indiana semifinal winner has gone on to win the State championship in three of the five years, The closest Froebel has been previously under the four-team setup was in 1936 when the Blue Devils lost a 35-29 decision to Frankfort in an afternoon game.
