BERMAN DEVICE AIDS TAKE-OFFS

Rights Assigned to One of Big Plane Builders In Reich.

WASHINGTON, March 19.—Nazi ls

bombing planes, taking off on raids over England, may be using a new invention just granted a U. S. pat-

ent. The inventor, Kurt Tank of]

Bremen, has assigned the patent, No. 2234883, to Focke-Wulf Flugzeughau G. m. b. H. one of the principal airplane builders of the Reich In order to take off with a heavy load, it is necessary for a plane to have greater lifting capacity at the start than when in flight at high speed. To accomplish this, various means have been used, such as an auxiliary wing. which extends out from the main wing to the back, to increase the wing area. A gap is usually left between the back of the main wing and the front of the auxiliary to prevent the formation of eddy currents of air where the two join. This, says » Herr Tank, is satisfactory when the angles of the two wings are about the same. With the high speeds

and heavy loads of modern planes,

he says, it is often necessary to tilt the rear wing much more than the main one, Then the slot between

them is not enough to prevent the

eddies

In his invention, the extra wing| normally rests in a pocket in the|

rear part of the bottom of the main one, Bv a system of levers and worm gears, it can be swung down, then back, so that its forward edge touches the bottom of the main wing near the back. In the part of the main wing's bottom surface that projects over the front of the extra member is an opening This is connected to a Venturi tube, or suction pump. By drawing air from this opening, and discharging it where it will do no harm, eddy currents are eliminated, the inventor claims
