Mr. Knudsen said that the British financed expansion of 61 plants at a cost of $171,000,000. Up to March 1 of this year, Mr. Knudsen said, this Government arranged for the expansion of 302] plants at an estimated gost of $1,-| 574,000,000. He added that tax concessions have been granted for the expansion of 421 additional plants at an estimated cost of $393,000, 000 | to private industry. Discussing employment gains as a result of defense spending, Mr. Knudsen said that between May, 1940, and January, 1941, 1,445,000 additional persons were working in non-agricultural] industries. In manufacturing industries alone, he continued, there has been an increase of 968,000 persons during the same period.
