Mr. Knudsen said that the British financed expansion of 61 plants at a cost of $171,000,000. Up to March 1 of this year, Mr. Knudsen said, this Government arranged for the expansion of 302] plants at an estimated gost of $1,-| 574,000,000. He added that tax concessions have been granted for the expansion of 421 additional plants at an estimated cost of $393,000, 000 | to private industry. Discussing employment gains as a result of defense spending, Mr. Knudsen said that between May, 1940, and January, 1941, 1,445,000 additional persons were working in non-agricultural] industries. In manufacturing industries alone, he continued, there has been an increase of 968,000 persons during the same period. Most of the latter figure, he said, js caused by greater employment in the durable goods industry, which has hired 721,000 additional workers. Speaking of the prospects of an
