cond of four columns analyzing jie semi-final fournaments.
(Se deals with the Hammond super-regional.)
ACTUALLY SOUTH BEND CENTRAL is the only team in the Hammond semi-final that everyone expected to Lafayette Jefferson is coming instead of Lebanon; Logansport has taken Peru’s place, and Gary Froebel represents the hometown district, from where Hammond Tech was expected. Perhaps the most-improve-

ment-shown award should go to the Logan Berries,
who floundered around during the season and only found themselves on two or three occasions. Two other times these Berries were unable tc make a field goal in 16 minutes.
However, it's interesting to note |
that Logansport has shown itself + to be a strong tournament team. That was evidenced for the first time on New Year's Day when the Berries bested Coach Archie Chadd’s Anderson Indians in the afternoon game of the Big Four Tourney and proceeded to carry New Castle nto an overtime that night before yielding. Further proof was given in the Berries’ sectional victory over Walton and their regional triumph over Peru. a club they had failed twice to beat ‘during the season.

Deadly From Foul Circle
* LISTED AMONG Logan’s assets is its alertness, its teamwork, its deadly firing from the keyhole region and finally its coach. If there is any one reason why the Berries are still with us, it must be Cliff Wells, who usually keeps a few tricks up his sleeve until the blue chips are at stake. The Berries’ afternoon opponent—Gary Froebel—represents the noted cut-throat Calumet district, and although Froebel didn’t beat Hammond Tech's defending champions, it beat the team that beat the champions. Froebel has beeh smoothing its fire-department game for the tourney, believing such a style will be necessary if it is to get past Logan in the afternoon and South Bend, perhaps, at night. hopes brightened this week with the return of Sammy Isabel, who has been out of service with a

South Bend Central remains the favorite of the meet with its big, fast, razzle-dazzling outfit, Sectional and regional victories have shaken the idea that the | Bears maybe were victims of a tournament jinx, so psychologically Central is on a par with the other three. The upstate dopesters who would like to get Central out of the tournament are saying the Bears are beginning to falfer. There was evidence for such a statement last Saturday afternoon when Rochester held Central to (28 points in 32 minutes,

Lafayette the Underdog
FOR THE THIRD time in five years Lafayette finds itself a member of the Surviving Sixteen—but this time as the decided underdog. Coach Abie Masters’ boys weren’t expected to get past Lebanon, but they did. Aft that, the Broncs reportedly missed plenty of shots, which may hurt them this week, for Central is a strong backboard | club and seldom allows more than one crack at its basket at a time. : Masters will be matehing wits against another ex-Purdue player in Johnny Wooden, so both ought to know what to expect from the other. Incidentally, Purdue's Mel Taube was one of the few home- . town pickers to choose Lafayette

Ice Capitals in
Springfield
For League's Big 'If' Night
At least three changes in the American Hockey. League standings are possible after tonight’s full fourgame schedule which sends Indianapolis against the Indians at Springfield, Cleveland against Pittsburgh, Hershey agaihst Philadelphia and Providence against New Haven. The Caps are tied with Buffalo for third place in the western division, and a loss to Springfield this evening, coupled with a Pittsburgh victory would send the Hornets ahead of both Buffalo and Indianapolis. Cleveland’s top spot also is in danger, for Hershey is within two points of the Barons and can share the upper berth after this evening. Providence still remains out of reach of New Haven in the East, but Springfield, by beating the Caps, can go into second place, should Providence knock down the Eagles. These tooth-and-nail fights in both divisions indicate that the six teams to play for the Calder Cup and accompanying cash may not be determined until after the league closing next Sunday night. On that evening the Capitals will return home for their finale against Pittsburgh. But before that they have dates at Buffalo and Cleveland.
