REPORT SPAIN BALKS ON NAZI PRESSURE
~ LONDON, March 12 (U. P).— Neutral diplomatic messages from Spain reported today that Gen. Francisco Franco had dismissed his Ambassador at Berlin as the result of German pressure to take Spain into the tvar. According to the reports the ambassador, Gen. Eugenio Espinosa de Los Monteros, recently received from Joachim von Ribbentrop, the Gérman Foreign Minister, proposals for “Spanish co- operation” with Germany in the war, Franco rejected the proposals as Saconsistent with the honor of
. According to some reports Hitler ‘wanted Spain to enter the war and grant Germany airplane and submarine bases. "Other reports said Germany’s principal demand was for facilities to enable its air force units to move across Spain toward Morocco. Such
a move as that would be calculated | ===
to involve Spain in the war.
