CONFERENCE ON BUSINESS URGED

Drafting of an Economic Constitution Suggested By 0’Mahoney.

WASHINGTON, March 11 (U. P.).—Chairman Joseph C. O’Mahoney (D. Wyo.) of the Federal Monopoly Committee suggested today that Congress call a conference § of business, labor, farm and con-| sumer leaders—similar to the con-| stitutional convention of 1787—to| draft a national economic constitution that would abolish the eco-| nomic uncertainties “which seem to threaten even our political system.” He also proposed “national charters for national business,” steps to increase the incomes of the lower brackets, “material reductions” ip tax rates on returns from new énterprises, and more vigorous enforcement of anti-trust laws,

business— ‘huge collective institutions which carry on our modern business” must assume “more definite responsibility toward all the people of the nation than they now have.” 2. Effective and thorough enforcement of anti-trust laws—"the great crisis which the world now faces in the conflict of democracy and dictatorship” should convince all that the time has come to outlaw all monopolistic practices “in a way that will be effective.” 3. Encouragement of new busingss and small enterprise—‘first a program of incentive taxation and, s¢cond, the establishment of a system of privately insured loans. .. .” 4. A national conference of leaders— ‘to concentrate public thought and action on objectives on which there is general agreement, instead of, as now, on objectives concerning which there is only misunderstarnd-

ATIONS FOR BRITISH AID

Aid Allies Committee Head Challenges America First To Do the Same.

NEW YORK, March 11 (U, P.) — The Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies today listed all its contributors of $100 or more. The list was aescribed as a ‘reply

to the recent declaration of Senator Burton K. Wheeler (D. Mont.) that the committee was the “tool” of international bankers and British war propagandists. Former Senator Ernest W. Gibson of Vermont, committee chairman, said an investigation of the America First Committee weuld reveal a “strange conglomeration of business appeasers, bundists, Communists, Fascists and . . . misguided Americans.” He challenged the America First Committee to list its contributors. Mr. Gibson's list showed that more than 700 persons had contributed $100 or more, that the largest single contribution was $5000 by playwright Robert Sherwood and that the committee had collected a total of $324,459. Contributors and contributions listed included: J. P. Morgan, more than $250 but less than $500; Mrs. Dwight W. Morrow, more than $1000 but less than $5000; Katherine Hepburn and Lynn Fontaine, actresses, between $250 and $500; Mrs. Herbert H. Lehman, wife of the Governor of New York, between $500 and $1000; Henry R. Luce, publisher, between $500 and $1000; Samuel Goldwyn, $100; David Dubinsky, president of the International Ladies Garment Workers

Union, between $250 and $500, and |-

a group of about 50 playwrights, stage and screen producers, novelists, actors, publishers and composers, a total of $24,608. Contributors of $100 each included Mrs. Irving Berlin, Mrs. Marshall Field; William Averill Harriman, liaison man between the British and United States Governments, now en route to London; former Justice of the United States Supreme Court James McReynolds, U. S. Supreme Court Justice Frank Murphy, Libby Reynolds and Edna St. Vincent Millay.

‘CRIME FATTENS’ IS BRITAIN’'S SLOGAN

LONDON, March 11 (U. P). Britain adopted this slogan today: “Crime does not pay—it fattens.” Nct only does such a “basic food” as cheese fatten, but it may make the consumer liable to fine or imprisonment or both. You can also become a criminal by eating a herring at the wrong time. Cheese and fish are “basic foods” under the Government's new vitamin control. One may have cheese, fish or eggs or meat at one meal, but not two or more of these basic foods.

CARDINAL DIES IN COLOGNE

BERLIN, March 11 (U. P).— Karl Joseph Cardinal Schulte, 69, Archbishop of Cologne, died today of a heart attack, the official news agency said in a dispatch from Cologne. Cardinal Schulte, a na-

tive of Germany, was elected to the College of Cardinals in 1921.
