MANIAC HUNTED IN GIRL'S DEATH

‘Kansas City Beauty Slain in Boudoir With Hammer And Butcher Kinfe.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. March 10 (U. P). — Police today hunted an “undoubted maniac,” who killed and mutilated Leila Welsh, 24-year-old brunet beauty, in her boudoir, with a stone mason’s hammer and a butcher knife.

Homicide squad officers said they had “three or four men” in jail for |

questioning, and had questioned sev.eral others, but “hadn’t a clue.” Miss Welsh, a former schoolteacher, was murdered early yesterday as she slept in her mother’s home, in a fashionable residential district. She was not assaulted.

Mother in Adjoining Room

The killer dropped a heavy hammer, with which he crushed her skull, in the bedroom. A longbladed butcher knife, whetted *o razor-like sharpness, was imbedded in the ground outside the bedroom window. Police said he apparently had thrown it there. She apparently was killed about 3 a. m., when her mother, Mrs. Marie F. Welsh, sleeping in an adJoining room. heard “two thumps,” which she believed had come from the furnace. Her hrother, George W. Welsh Jr, was not awakened, although he was sleeping close to her room. >

Attended ‘Police Circus’

Mrs. Welsh called her daughter to breakfast at 9 a. m. There was no. answer, and she forced open the door, against which a chair had been propped. Seeing the mutilated body, clad in ripped and bloodstained pajamas, she fled shrieking to a neighbor. _ Reconstructing the last hours of Miss Welsh’s life, officers said she had gone Saturday night to the annual “police circus.” She returned at 1:30 a. m. with a friend, Richard Funk, and they had sat in his automobile, in front of her home, chatting for a few minutes. She went into the house, and Mr. Funk went home. Police said his alibi was “absolutely okay.” The Killer climbed through a window, which he forced up.

‘Author Dead

Urge to Write Overcame Business “Interests of Sherwood Anderson.

CRISTOBAL, Canal Zone, March 10 (U. P.).—Sherwood Anderson, famous American author, died here Saturday night after a brief illness. He was AR4. Mr. Anderson was 40 years old before his first book was published, and many years of wandering about the country in menial jobs gave him an understanding of ordinary people which was the basis of his rank as one of the American masters of the short story. He adapted his simple, almost staccato, style to the cause of underprivileged workers and small town life as he observed it while editing two country weekly newspapers in Marion, Va. He was born in Camden, O., on Sept. 13, 1876, and began work at 15, helping his father paint houses.

He walked out on the paint business and eventually was found in a Chicago tenement, writing. is first book, “Windy McPherson’s Son,” was published in 1916. Among his’ most celebrated books was the short story collection, “Winesburg, Ohio,” written about small-town life in his native state. “A Story Teller’s Story” was another of the best of his career, as were | “Dar Laughter,” “Tar,” “Beyond
