K. C. Tourney Opens With Record Entry

The 16th annual Knights of CoTumbus tenpin tournament opens today at Pritchett’s Alleys and although split into an east and midwest division this year the local play-offs have drawn a record number of entries. Thirty-five teams of Milwaukee keglers will open the meet at 4

o'clock this afternoon. Squads will also go on the drives at 9 o'clock tonight. The organization's opening banquet is scheduled for 6 o'clock this evening at the K. of C. clubhouse. Governor Henry F. Schricker, James E. Deery, city controller; William P. King, president of the K. of C. Bowling Association and Wilford G. Alberts, national secretary, will be present, Timothy P. Galvin, supreme national director, will be the principle speaker of the evening. A record number of 654 teams, including more than 1000 Chicago bowlers will compete for céntral division honors over a seven week-end schedule. Competition in the eastern division will open at Utica, N. ¥., March 22.

Double and single events in the 35th annual city bowling tourney continue today at Sturm Alleys. Six full squads are on today’s card.

COLUMBUS, O., March 8 (U. P.). —The Big Ten wrestling tournament was reduced today to a battle between five schools after preliminary matches at Ohio State University. Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Purdue and Indiana were rated possible title winners, although favorite at the start of the tournament, lost two of its individual stars in the preliminaries, * Billy Sherman of Iowa pinned Bob Antonacci, Indiana's 212-pound N. C. A. A. champion, and John Roberts of Wisconsin « defeated Harry Traster of Indiana in the 165-pound division. Two defending champions, Tony Montonaro of Ohio State in the 145pound class, and Ben Wilson of Indiana in the 136-pound division, gained places in the finals. Minnesota and Iowa each placed three men in the finals which will be staged Saturday afternoon, while Michigan, Indiana and Purdue qualified two. Other teams, except Northwestern, got one man in the finals.

MIAMI, March. 8 (U. P.).—Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis today was offered a guarantee of $30.000 or a title bout “anywhere, anyme” with Melio Bettina, former ight heavyweight champion, depending on the outcome of Bettina's fight with Buddy Knox here tomorrow night. Jimmy Grippo, Bettina's manager, said his fighter would meet lous 4. any city at any time the cha and his promoters cared to name. The $30,000, Grippo said, will be deposited in any bank Louis’ managers wished. Bettina, Grippo said, “has won every one of his 21 heavyweight fights and has lost only four of his total of 67. Rice Makes Final New York Run

NEW YORK, March 8 (U. P).— With an entry list that reads like a “Who's Who” of the track and field world, the 22d annual Knights of Columbus meet climaxes\.the New York indoor track season in Madison Square Garden tonight. Probability of a half dozen new world and meet records from the all-star field of 1941 record breakers and current crop. of National A. A. U. champions, is expected to pack the Garden oval with 18,000 persons the season's largest crowd. Greg Rice makes his final New York appearance -of an all-con-quering season in the Bishop Donahue two-mile. Rice has won 45 straight board-floor races in two geasons, including all his eight starts this year.

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s radio listeners will have a chance to call the tune on the orchestra’s final CBS-WFBM broadcast concert, March 30. Fabien Sevitzky has announced that the last half-hour program will be devoted to the most frequently requested music which is compatible with the time limit. Not only Indianapolis listeners but others throughout the country who have heard the network series are invited to send in their choices. The deadline for requests is midnight of March 23. For his second guest-conducting appearance with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, George Szell has chosen a program of music from his native Czechoslovakia. The broadcast concert, at 8:35 o'clock tonight on NBC-Blue, will include the “Bartered Bride” Overture of Smetana; an arrangement of the same composer’s string quartet, “From My Life”; the Carnival Overture by Dvorak; Smetana's symphonic poem, “Vitava,” and four of the Dvorak: Slavonic Dances.
