are 18 years of age instead of the present 16-year limit. Senator Edward Green (R. Indianapolis) asserted that the pension fund was “unsound from an actuarial standpoint” but he agreed to support the bill after officials of the Fund and Chamber of Commerce agreed to study the Fund during the next two years and work out a solution to be presented to the next Legislature. Senator. Green said that under terms of the present bill it would be possible for a policeman to pay only $3000 into the fund and yet for he and his heirs to get $18,000 in benefits out of it. Although it had already passed a bill which among other things repealed the truck tire tax, the Senate yesterday approved a House bill specifically’ repealing the controversial tax. Republicans explained that the former bill contained Senate amendments fixing an increased scale of truck license fees to make up for some of the revenue to be lost through repeal of the tax. They said the specific repealer was passed so that the truckers would receive the relief promised them during the political campaign in case the former bill might “for some reason’ be declared unconstitutional. Effective Jan. 1, 1942
The repeal of the truck tire tax is to be effective Jan. 1, 1942. A G. O. P. measure providing that officials and employees of state departments who are removed after public hearings may appeal to Marion County Circuit or Superior Court was passed by the Senate by a strictly party vote of 28 to 15. House bills passed by the Senate yesterday would: Increase the population limit for cities which may elect school boards of five members to 75,000. Grant a $400 salary increase to auditors in counties of from 25,000 to 130,000 population. _ Require actions for damages against surgeons, hospitals, etc., to | be filed within two years of the date of the act about which the complaint is filed. Require the State Highway Commission to improve and maintain the highways and driveways on the premises of ‘all state institutions. | Give the State Auditor the/| authority to dispose of obsolete state property such as automobiles, Give the Workmen's Compensa-

Indianapolis) td take administration of poor relief in Marion County from the hands of the township trustees and place it under the jurisdiction of the County Welfare Department. The Senate adopted the report of its County and Township Affairs Committee which recommended indefinite postponement of the bill. Senator Walter Vermillion (D. Anderson) said the bill provided for the establishment of a hitherto untried “set-up” in poor relief and was “too dangerous to try in a county as large as Marion.” Passage of the measure was urged by W. Rowland Allen, personnel manager of L. S. Ayres & Co., on the grounds that a central administration of poor relief was needed.
