IN TRADE FIGHT
Leipzig Exhibits Reveal German Urgency to Extend Markets.
“DAVID M. NICHOL
1941, by The Indianapolis Times e Chicago Daily News, Inc.
os March 3 (Delayed).— The urgency with which Germany is seeking to extend its export markets is nowhere better demonstrated than in the 1941 version of the famous ‘Leipzig Fair, which had its beg f almost 800 years ago. For genturies the city was the crossroagl of a continent living almost tirely on . its flourishing trade, I§s’position as the show window of Europe will be considerably enhanced if the new order is achieved according fo the German blueprints. Progress has been made in this direction even during the stress which total war has placed on the Reich's economy.
Hépe for 9000 Buyers
Last year, for example, orders amounting to 1,000,000,000 reichmarks were placed during the spring and fall exhibits, according to fair on Export figures are guarded @lmost as carefully as the weather reports, but something from one-tenth to one-fifth of this
total is believed to have been from foreign customers. More -gains are forecast for the current year. Six thousand foreign buyers were here last spring. This season, fair officials hope more than 9,000 will have left some erders by the week’s end. The international buildings. include exhibits from 22 countries. All of continental Europe except France and Portugal, and 6865 exhibitors are represented, a gain of 250 over last year. Vastly 'different from American fairs is ‘the Leipzig institution. It is entirely a businessmen’s show. There is fo midway, no special entertainment and only a minimum of decoration,
Two Groups of Exhibits
The general tone of the exhibit conforms with the new order, reduced to its simplest economic terms, by which Germany supplies the bulk of Europe’s manufactured goods in return for the raw materials it must have. The foreign booths stress agriculture and natural resources. German exhibits fall into two general groups, those for home and those for foreign consumption, and it is here that the full drive of the Reich’s foreign trade policy is apparent. Real leather goods and metal toys are almost solely for export. The export furniture section is much richer and more luxurious than the domestic exhibit. Metals of all sorts continue to be replaced wherever possible. Bedsprings and hardware of wood are
