FORECAST HERE

Already Up 6000 on Defense Projects and May Jump To 16,000.

By SAM TYNDALL

Indianapolis and Marion County, chosen to play a leading role in the rearming of America, face the prospect of a beautiful spring, industrially Rak From ell the defense projects awarded in this locality, factory employment, since last August, has increased by only approximately 6000 workers. But iinder present projected plans —and only those publicly announced —employment in defense plants alone eventually will be increased by 15,000 to 16,000. As of today, the defense industry here is still in the “post hole” stage, but as!to what's in store for next fall, not even the Chamber of Commerce will hazard a guess. In other words, the expansion is only beginning.

Here's a Rundown

Here's a rundown on the outstanding cefense plants with estimates of new or prospective employment; . et Wright propeller division, 4000. RCA, Indianapolis plant (radio equipment), 3000. Naval Ordnance Plant (precision equipmerit), 2000. Bridgeport Brass Mill (cartridge cases), 2000. Allison. Division (warplane motors), 2600, (probably within the next 10 days). Schwitzer-Cummings Co, (ammunition components), 350. Gisler | Castings Plant castings). 300. The total is 14,500. These estimates, of course, are from the larger companies.

Small Firms Affected, Too

In addition, Chamber of Commerce officials say that increased employment in small companies with small contracts easily will exceed 1000 men by late spring. Out! in the old Marmon plant on W. Mortis St., workers are ripping

Peak Some Way Off

And it will be some time before the plant reaches its peak employment goal of 4000. Here, as in many other cases, there is a demand for skilled and semi-skilled workers and these are not always available. Unskiliesd men will have to be trained into their jobs. In some kinds of work the process is not fast. But slowly and without interruption the Middle West and Indianapolis is bringing its defense productions up to the pace already established in the East.

The Board, which had been subjected fic criticism for delays, largely reduced the backlog of cases confronting it, Mr. Millis said; at the énd of the ‘fiscal year there were 1177 fewer cases pending before the Board.
