BRITISH TO EAT EGGS OF GULLS
Used to Sell for 4 Cents in Pubs, Now They May Aid in War.
By WILLIAM H. STONEMAN Conyrignt 4 by The Indianapolis Times . LONDON, March 4--Marie Antoinette’'s famous wisecrack, “If the people have no bread, let them eat cake” has found its modern counterpart in the British Government's suggestion that people who cannot get hen’s eggs can eat gulls’ eggs. . Gulls’ eggs always have been fancied by British beer drinkers and before: the war were sold by most pubs at 4 cents apiece. They are Just about as good as plovers’ eggs. The seagull population of the island kingdom being several times its human population, and the average lady gull being accustomed to produce four eggs per nest, there should be, theoretically, enough eggs to keep the country alive in a pinch. It is now announced that, beginning next month, there will be feed for only one-sixth of Great Britain’s prewar poultry population which in June, 1939, stood at 52,000,000. Momentarily, there are rations for only one-third that number. Due to the shortage, several million chickens are going to have their heads chopped off and eggs, which have been just slightly more
numerous than rubies, will be evén|ol Indianapolis and Harry Zimmer-
more precious. The British public still is not being asked to eat emu eggs, as the Russians were some years ago. The difficulty in that case was that the Russians could not even produce emu eggs.
MILK CONTROL BOARD WOULD BE EXTENDED
After long debate, the Senate today passed and sent to the House a bill giving the State Milk Control Board two more years of life. ' The Board, under the present law, to expire one June 30, 1941. The Senate-approved measure sets up a Milk Control Board of seven members, two milk producers, two ‘milk consumers, two distributors and the Commissioner of Agriculture. Appointments, except for the commissioner of agriculture, are to be made by the Governor. Senator Howard V. Johnson (R. Mooresville), declared that the Senate should pass the bill “because the farmers want it.” Several Senators spoke in -apposition, The final vote was 38 to 17.
