Nazis Slap Our Movies
Rumanians Warned to Thin Hollywood Output.
By GEORGE WELLER Copyright 1941 by The Indianapolis Times and The Chicago Daily News, Inc.
SOFIA, Feb. 27.—With the German and Rumanian military machines beginning to click together as smoothly as an army motorcycle and its sidecar, a hitherto unnoticed gap in the cultural front was plugged today when a Bucharest newspaper warned Rumanian film fans of the insidious effect of Hol-lywood-made pictures upon public taste and morals. Under the headline, “How Much Longer,” an editorial writer in the Bukarest Tagblatt, German daily of the capital, administered a verbal lacing to the Rumanian fan ¥magazine, Cinema, for having devoted a long article to the honeymoon plans of Bette Davis. “We Germans are the more disgusted,” it was said, “because German actors and worthwhile articles about German films appear in the same magazine and German film kultur is placed side by side with Jewish trash.” The newspaper Universul was alsa scolded for giving space to Charlie Chaplin. The German journalist suggested that, in a healthy nation, people who resembled Chaplin “are put under lock and key, but in America, creatures like that run around loose, are stared at, praised, even honored. And apparently,” concluded the Tagblatt, with a significant series of dots, “not merely over in the States, either.”

Trouble's Brewin
By FREDERICK C. OTHMAN United Press Hollywood Correspondent GOWER GULCH, HOLLYWOOD, Cal., Feb. 27—The fighting men of Gower Gulch, who earn up to $75 a day, depending on how good they are at pinking Indians in the movies, fought for nothing today over who's going to be mayor. Gentleman Jack Evans, whose high-heeled boots and whiskers have been landmarks hereabouts for the last 22 years, finally got so mad at Rube Dalroy, his opponent, he kicked him out the front door of Ed Brewer's saloon. “The dirty, three-legged coyote,” grunted Evans. “Tryin’ to set hisself up in my job. The one-cell crack pot. I won't say one word agin him. The vote’ll tell.” Dalroy, whose whiskers are even more magnificent than Evans’, picked himself from the pavement of Sunset Blvd. and yelled:

“You half-witted, . lame - brain skunk, you. I'll toss yuh into the gutter where yuh belong.”
March 17 is election day in Gower Gulch, with horse opera stars from Gene Autry to wild Bill Elliott already getting their ballots into the box on Brewer's bar. Dee Gascoigne, who can fall off a galloping horse with nary a bruise, is keeper of the ballots.
The Gulch’ was progressing fine under the leadership of Evans, until a few months .back, when Black Jack Ward pulled out his shootin’ iron and put a bullet through the head of John (Pizen) Tyke, killing him deader'n a Piute. Black Jack beat the rap, when his pals. testified Pizen pulled a knife, and he's back acting in the movies again. “’Tain’t the point,” insisted Rube Dalroy. “That shootin’ gave the Gulch a bad name.
