Basket Badgers Surprised All But Bud Foster
By DON SANDERS NEA Staff Correspondent Wisconsin's phenomenal one-year zoom from ninth to first place in the Big Ten basketball race apparently amazed everyone but Bud Foster. The Oshkosh seed salesman who finds time in winter's slack season to coach the Badger hoopsters knew he had the most promising squad since his first year as Wisconsin coach, 1934-35, when the Badgers tied for first place. General improvement up Madison way was in the cards, but most every other Big Ten team looked
gers to do much better than fourth or fifth. Indiana, Purdue and Illinois looked too strong.
What Coach Harold E. Foster knew at the beginning of the season was that he had a couple sophomores who had plenty of natural ability and showed signs of fitting into the deliberate Wisconsin system which revolves around carefully planned block plays and screen shots. Much credit for the unproved showing over 1939-40, when the Badgers won three and lost nine, goes to two of those sophomores, John Kotz and Fred Rehm. Kotz, a natural one-hand shot
as a floor man in pre-season drills to clinch a forward berth, bearing with the remarkable Gene Englund the burden of Badger basketmaking. . Rehm developed into a fine defensive player as the season. progressed. A transformed center, he provided needed height under the backboards. Englund, the best point maker in modern Wisconsin history and outstanding center in the conference, was the team’s mainstay. Standing 6 feet 4 inches, he is a valuable man under either basket, has a passable eye from out on the floor.
this year was to convince Gene
Englund he didn’t have to break up
every pass, hound every man.
The big center has pretty well |
conquered that tendency, and high scorer in the Big Ten. Now Badger fans are parodying Britain's favorite tune in a bit of wishful thinking called “There will always be an Englund.”
