Dr. John J. Haramy, head of the social science department at Indiana Central College, is to speak over WFBM tomorrow afternoon at 4:15. His topic will be “America’s Destiny,” » » 8

Announcements that Station “WIBC definitely will tie up with the Mutual Broadcasting Company and that the' city’s new station, WISH, will be an NBC-Blue affiliate mean that all the big features on the nation’s ; four leading networks will be available on local stations. WIRE is the local outlet for NBC-Red and WFBM for the Columbia Broad- i casting System. WIRE is also a Mz: Swing Mutual station but most of its net iy programs come from NBCThis department reported about two Weeks ago that WIBC was contemplating a tieup with Mutual if an arrangement could be worked out whereby the station could pick the best of the commentators, dance bands and other Mutual features and leave the rest of the time for the local and Indiana programs that WIBC emphasizes. Apparently such an arrangement has been worked out. The decision of WISH to join the NBC-Blue network, however, comes as a pleasant surprise. C. Bruce McConnell, president of the Capitol Broadcasting Co., which will operate WISH, said today some little difficulty was being encountered in receiving equipment, due to heavy defense orders, but that he felt confident the new station -would be in operation about May 1. Announcement on the location of the WISH studio will be made about March 15, he said. WIBC expects to inaugurate fulltime operation as a Mutual outlet about April 15, according to C. A. McLaughlin, vice president and general manager. ° Among Mutual artists and personalities to be featured over WIBC are Wythe Williams, Albert Mitchell, Dorothy Thompson, Boake Carter, Fulton Lewis Jr., Raymond Gram Swing, and Gabriel Heatter. Prominent musicians who will be heard include Guy Lombardo, Ray Heatherton, Ted Fio Rito, Gene ie Eddie Duchin and Jan Garer.

NBC-Blue features which will be available on WISH include Horace Heidt's Pot of Gold program, Ben Bernie, Tommy Dorsey, Walter Winchell, the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts, the NBC Symphony con- | certs directed by Arturo Toscanini and the Music Appreciation Hour with Walter Damarosch, 2 ” »

“The Mystery of Edgar Allan Poe,” is the dramatic subject on this evening's Cavalcade program, 6:30 WLW, and according to program sponsors the drama will surpass in exciting complexity some of the masterly detective stories written by the famous author. Hitherto unpublished research by the Poe authority, Victor Thaddeus, and by Dr. Frank Monaghan of Yale, historical consultant on the Cavalcade series, was used by Norman Rosten, young poet-playwright, in writing the radio story.

” " #

Jeanette MacDonald is to be the guest of The Pause That Refreshes on the air program Sunday at 3:30 p. m, over WFBM. Miss MacDonald will sing Franz Lehar’s “Merry Widow Waltz,” and Moore's “Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms.”

HOMING PIGEONS DRAFTED SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (U, P.).— Thomas Gallivan, president of the Springfield Pigeon Club, has agreed to respond to the Army’s plan to draft homing pigeons by recruiting 1000 birds from private owners.

COMPULSORY RENTAL OF TEXTBOOKS URGED

With free textbooks evidently a dead subject so far as this legisla-

tive session is concerned, Senator. Howard V. Johnson (R. Mooresville) today introduced a bill which

system in each state school beginning in 1943. It provides that no school corporation nor township trustee buying the books for rental may charge more than 25 per cent of the retail price as an annual rental. The bill was drawn up by Senator Walter S. Chambers (D. New Castle) and was agreed upon by several Republican leaders, including Mr. Johnson. Senator Chambers pointed out that for a textbook costing $1, the rental fee would be 25 cents and that the book would be paid for within three years. Since textbooks usually are adopted for five years, the book would be free to puipls using it the last year, he said.
