Hand Weaving Suggested As Hobby
By RUTH MILLETT Times Special Writer NEW YORK, Feb. 26—If you don’t think that weaving is glamorous, exciting, and can lead to a top-notch career, you haven't talked with Dorothy Wright Liebes, who makes her home in California when she isn’t traveling all over the world to round up the work of .artist craftsmen.

Homemaking— | Local Shoe Salons Will Help Put Spring “in Your Step
By CAPT. VICTOR H. KING Instructor in Physical Culture, West Point
WET POINT, N. Y.—Well, here we are at the end of the course. If the daily lessons have left you flat on your back, let's wind up the course with a side exercise. : . Lie on your right side on the floor, left hand on your hips, your upper body raised up and supported by your extended right arm, your hips and entire lower body off the floor. Now raise your hips up off the floor as high as you can, at the same time extending the left arm upward, as shown in illustration. Lower to the starting position. Repeat several times and then turn over onto your left side and repeat it several times on that side. :
~ SHOES FOR SPRING are all-American in more than one way. They are American-inspired as well as American-made. A “brouse” in ~ the local shops and shoe departments of the stores leads to the conclusion that the American effort is all one could ask for in both appearance ai = comfort. One of the outstanding contri-
butiores by shoe desiglers this spring is the assumption upon which the manufacturers have based their efforts—that American women are active individuals and therefore must have shoes designed for comfort. There is a surprising number of low and medium heels on shoes that somehow and someway give the illusion of smartness which goes with the high-heeled ones. Many are open-toed and when not there is usually a walledlast to give the wearer that “roomy’’ feeling.

In concluding this course, I wish to point out that you now have a complete set of exercises which you can use indefinitely. Do all of them each day if you wish, and have the time, or do as many of them daily as you can. I honestly believe that there is nothing you could do in such a brief period daily that will pay you as many and valuable dividends as will these setting-up exercises.
I could have given you any of
of them excellent ones. I tried, however, to choose those which, when put together, would give you an excellent course for the entire body, and yet choose ones that anyone can easily learn to do.
After all, the worth of any exercise is measured by the results it has proved itself capable of producing. I know what these exercises can do for you. I want you to know, also. You will, if you will but

Draperies may be woven of silver foil and raw silk. Decorative Venetian blinds may be made of strips of plastic, white leather, silk, and rayon. Right now Miss Liebes’ assistants are busy weaving the draperies for the grand ballroom of the United States Liner “America” — huge, luscious, single roses on a silver gray background. At the present time her work can be seen at New York's Metropolitan Museum -
' Elasticized fabric is used in many of the shoes. ' This allows the shoe to grip the foot in a smooth and slender -fit—a boon to those who are devoted to pumps, for it practically eliminates any gapping at the sides.
Pumps Are Popular
Judging from the large number shown, pumps will be the popular spring shoe. I. Miller, who introduced Lastex last year, uses it extensively for pumps in its spring collection. Outstanding are shoes, ranging from casual to dress in two new colors, “Two Ocean Navy” and “Biscuit Beige.” Wasson’s carries the I, Miller line.

The Question Box
Q—How can I remove the moisture from coconut? A—Grate it on a fine grater, and place over a low fire in 2 tablespoons of water. Stir constantly until very hot and then remove from fire and squeeze the coconut meat in a heavy cloth to remove all the milk.
Q—What sort of rug would be suitable where there are children and a plain rug shows every footprint? A—We suggest a patterned rug in a conservative design or a plain rug with a figure or design of a slightly darker tone.
Q—When addressing their elders should children be taught to say “Yes, Ma’'m,” and No, Sir’? A—These forms are now considered ‘ too. subservient and may be replaced by “Yes, Mother,” or “No, Mr. Smith.”
Q—How can I manage a child with temper tantrums? A—If the tantrums represent an unconscious protest against the thwarting of some fundamental de-

MISS LIEBES thinks hand weaving would make an enjoyable and worthwhile hobby for any woman. She points out: “Weaving is a folk art—a home craft. We are likely to forget that our great-grea grandmothers wove their linens. From them we inherited our love of textiles. \ “It doesn’t take any superior artistic sense to learn the weaving. Any woman can learn. Though, of course, it does take great artistic ability to turn the craft into an art. “But the average woman could invest fifteen or twenty dollars in a hand loom, and get all the ‘thrill of painting from mixing her col-

At Block's there is a black patent pump made by Delman that “licks” that problem of gapping at the "sides. Patent cannot be elasticized so the Delman people have created a patent pump and banded it at the top with gabardine, which holds the patent shoe snug against the foot. ‘A new shade, “blonde,” is used for an attractive pump in flexible ostrich hide. It comes in a high-heel, open-toed dress shoe and a spectator pump with moderate heel and closed toe.
Black Is Outstanding
Black is the most prevalent of the shoe colors with navy second and the shades of tan a close third. Saddle tan is definitely in the fashion picture. There are many shoes in this shade to go with the purses, gloves, belts, cigaret cases, jewelry, ete, which are featured in the stores. Remember Palmino, which Joyce introduced late last summer? Well, this spring that soft leather in a golden tan is back. This time it is made into a play shoe with a cushioned sole, called “Pinto,” with an open toe and side lacing. A similar shoe, called “Roundup,” has the front lacing. There are bags and belts to match. Ayres carries the Joyce products.

Q—Is it necessary to use glass curtains with, Venetian blinds? A—No.
Q—The mouth of my 12-year-old daughter is spoiled by overlapping teeth, one on each side, which gives her upper lip a squared look. Her teeth are sound and apparently well spaced except these two cuspids. What should I do about it? A—Dentists usually recommend that the teeth should be extracted while the child is quite young. Your best course is to consult a good dental surgeon.
. Q—Please give cleaning light shades. A—Spread a sheet on the floor, unroll the shade and scrub with magnesia and water, using a soft cloth. After treating one side turn the shade over and clean it in the same way. This method removes the dirt satisfactorily and renews the shade at a cost of about 10 cents. Shades may be renewed also by stretching them on a flat surface and giving them a coat of flat paint.

to indoor rinks or to outdoor ones at winter sports resorts or in public parks, precautions to protect you against accidents will be taken and persons experienced in first aid will doubtless be at hand if needed. If, however, you join a small group to go skating on a frozen lake or stream in the couniry, be sure that someone in the group knows what do do in the dangerous’ emergencies that might arise. A long board or ladder and a rope are considered important pieces of first aid equipment for such skating parties. They will prove extremely useful in case one of the skaters breaks through the ice and has to be pulled out of the water. This is not an easy thing to do, and the rescuers must work fast, both because the icy water quickly numbs the victim and Qecause of the danger of his being lost under the ice. If you are on skates, you are in a better position to pull someone out of the water because you can get a better foothold. Otherwise it is better for several persons to pull together, slowly but steadily.
” Ed ” IN USING the ladder or board,
lie flat on the ice and crawl toward |:
the accident victim, pushing the board ahead of you. This distributes your weight, lessening the strain on the thin ice surface, and the likelihood of more of it breaking and perhaps plunging you along into the ciy water. Of course, the rescuer’ should not go any closer to the hole in the ice than is necessary. : Remember that the cold water
will quickly numb the victim, makirig his fingers useless for grasping
anything. So in extending the board or a pole or ladder or rope t¢ hini, provide some easy means for him to hold onto it while he is being pulled out. A loop in the rope into which he can slip his wrist, arm or even his body is the best arrangement. If you have no rope, you can tie the sleeves of a coat together with a necktie, handkerchief or skate strap. Or one of these can be used to make a loop at the end of a stick or pole.

The one I love is shiftless, selfish, and entirely incompetent to make a home, but he has an irresistible smile and a magnetic personality. What shall I do? Shall I marry the one I love and have the happiness of love, or shall I marry the other and have the happiness of security?

Answer—I just wonder if either of these brothers would be attractive to you without the other to act as a foil. the rivalry between them always has been intense and that if one lost interest in you the other’s would cool. ways has been outwitted by the charm of the unstable brother, and the charmer has been irked by the admiration evoked by the virtues of the other. Very likely one of them was preferred above the other by his parents and the two go through life repeating their struggle
The trick of playing one suitor against the other is an old one, still used because it succeeds so often. You can infuriate the steady brother by loving the unsteady one, and hold the unsteady one’s
I do not mean that you consciously planned to set these two men against each other but you must admit that this is what you have done. It is a rather cruel technique and you feel guilty about
It is far better for you and for the brothers for you to find one man who combines enough of the qualities of both to satisfy you instead of splitting your affection into two parts, one given to a man whom you love without trusting and half given to a man whom you trust without loving, My guess is that this isn’t the first time you have been in such a situation and that a little research on your part would uncover something similar in your childhood. Life does not pick out a few persons to regard with disfavor. Evidently you lack the skill to deal with bad luck. Stretches of it come to all but some meet it more courageously than others and dodge it more diligently. For example, you can withdraw from the situation you find yourself in now and substitute something less
