Lou Thomas

Anderson Examined * Before Entering Ring

CHICAGO, Feb. 25 (U. P).—A coroner’s physician said today hypertrophy (enlargement) of the heart had caused the death of Arne Anderson, 22-year-old St. Paul, Minn.,, heavyweight who died last night during the seventh round of the windup match at a Chicago arena. An inquest into the death was cancelled when Dr. Paul Schmitt signed a certificate which attrib-

uted the death to “natural causes.” The physician's decision was announced after an examination of the body, several hours after a fire rescue squad ‘had worked over Anderson in an attempt to revive him. Anderson had climbed into the ring for his bout with Lou Thomas of Indianapolis after an examina-

tion by Dr. Frank Logaria, physi~

sian for the Illinois boxing commis“sion, had indicated he was physically sound. He had been in training 10 days for the match and had fought at the same arena three weeks ago when he knocked out his opponent in the first round. The fighters traded blow for blow and at the end of the sixth round Anderson told his manager, Karl

Ogren: : “I'm feeling fine. I'll knock the

: guy out before the fight is over.”

He took a hard right on the chin during the seventh round and they went into a clinch. Referee Walter Brightman separated them and Anderson fell backward. His head hit the canvas and he lay motionless. Logaria entered the ring. immediately and ordered a pullmotor squad called. The referee had scored the bout © 31-29 in Anderson's favor. One judge had scored the fight 30-30 and the other had given Thomas the edge, 31-29, at the end of the sixth. The final clinch came after about one minute of the seventh. Anderson had been the favorite in the match. He had previously fought Lee Savold, Des Moines, - Jowa, heavyweight contender, and other well-known - Middle Western fighters. Anderson came to the United States from Stockholm, Sweden, about two years ago. Friends said they believed his only living relative was his father at Stockholm.

Lou Thomas, 5227 W. Washington st., has been fighting professionally for eight years. He is a Shortridge High School graduate and owner of

the West Side Athletic Club.

The 25-year-old boxer has been inactive for several seasons and just

‘ returned to the ring eight months

ago.

Pro Mitt Show Goes Friday

. Bud Taylor, one of Floosierdom’s “greats” in the fight game, will be in the ringside section Friday night when the newly organized Businessmen’s Sports Club presents its first professional mitt show. The top six-rounder for Friday’s card was all set today, Robert Bowes, club president, announced.

will bring together Bobby Berger of Pittsburgh and Tito Taylor of Chicago. Taylor received a sliare of the Windy City spotlight recently as he acted :.s chief sparring partner for Tony Zale as Zalé trained for his title-defense setto with Steve Mamakos at the Stadium last Friday night. Ringside tickets went on sale this morning at the Claypool Drug Store and at the Sportsman's Store, and a brisk demand for the cheice reservations was indicated by early reports. ‘Sam Scully of Chicago ard Lloyd Pine of Akron, who meet in the tenround main event, and Earl Kidd of Akron, who tackles local Johnny Denson in the eight-round semiwindup, are training in their home Wwns.

Larry Ryan slipped under the basket unmolested to score for Notre Dame shortly after the intermission was over. Dietz then cashed in on a foul from Riska but Cy Singer made up for it soon after with an Irish field goal. He was fouled on the play by McCray but missed, Butler took time ouf and if was Dietz again who put the Butlers back on the right track with a twopointer soon afterward. With eight minutes remaining and the score safe for Butler at 48 to 32, Dietz committed his fourth personal, this one on Joe Gillespie, and Butler reserves as well as the cheering section arose to cheer him on his last tri ip to the bench, Schumacher took is place. The Harold Bradon - Elwood Norris forward combination soon got its chance and the Butlers were never in danger. With minutes to go the Irish resorted to over-active drives for the ball and as fast as they fouled, Butler declined the shots, took the

play going their way. It was first-class basketball entertainment for the 7500 attending. But next at hand is the season finale with Franklin. The Bulldogs have won 23 consecutive conference games and they've had the conference title for the last two years. They've beaten Franklin, = 45-32, previously this season and they need to do it again to gain at least a tie for the 1941 title. And
