SENATE PASSES WAGE MEASURE
25¢ an Hour Bill Goes to House Following Heated Debate.
© A minimum wage bill, providing that all employers of eight or more persons must pay not less than 25
cents an hour, was approved by the Senate today, 33 to 9, and sent tc the Huuse. The measure “affects thousands of employees, mostly women in stores, factories and restaurants,” its sponsors said. Specifically exempted are hotel waiters, domestic employees, farm laborers, charitable, religious and fraternal organizations and non-profit telephone corporations. . It was passed after a heated debate in which several Senators declared that “this is a step in the right direction.”
Stout Sees Danger
“What are we going to do about the thousands and thousands of employees in stores who are not getting a living wage?” asked Senator John Atherton (R. Indianapolis). “This bill is going to do] a lot of good.” Senator Orville T. Stout (R. Vincenner) asserted that “passage of this measure would hurt thousands of laborers. There are lots of persons who are not worth 25 cents an hour. If we pass this bill, they would not be .able to get jobs.” Senator Harold W. Handley (R. La Porte): said that the bill would “assure thousands of clerks, soda jerkers, waitresses and waiters at least a halfway respectable wage.” “I've been hearing a lot about ‘freedom in the last six months,” he said, “but there has been very little said about economics freedom. How can there be economic freedom if these people just get $10 a week?”
Pell Enters Question
Senator C. Herman Pell. (R. Brazil) interrupted to ask Senator Handley “if it were not true that men made most of the living anyhow and that most of them got over 25 cents an hour?” . “Yes,” answered Senator Handley, “but how about the girls who can’t find husbands?” Senator Charles Bedwell (D. Sullivan) declared that the bill could not be called a union labor bill, since all labor union members get more than 25 cents an hour.” “This bill,” he said, “is for those thousands who are living on wages

Pegler Claims _ Labor Coerced
WASHINGTON, Feb. 24 (U. P.). —Westbrook Pegler, . newspaper columnist, told the House Judiciary Committee today that under present Federal labor laws “the Government drives men into unions and gives them no protection from union bosses.” Testifying at the Committee's inquiry into defense labor conditions ,Mr. Pegler recited numerous incidents of racketeering in labor unions. Rep. Francis E. Walter (D. Pa.), told Mr. Pegler it recently had been proposed that men employed in essential war industry be deprived by legislation of their preferential status under’ ‘ the draft if they strike. He asked whether such legislation would be “helpful.” “No,” said Mr. Pegler. “I think there's a threat in it. It would abridge a worker's right to strike.” ; “Do you consider your investigation and exposes as antilabor?” asked Rep. Sam Hobbs D. Ala.). “No,” said Mr. Pegler. “You believe in labor?” “Yes, 1 do.” : “And the right to strike?” “That's right.”

CAMP SHELBY, Miss., Feb. 24— Camp Shelby, where Indiana’s National Guard is in training, “probably is the best camp in the United States today,” according to Maj.
Gen. Robert H. Tyndall, Camp commander. Construction was begun last September, and when the 38th Division National Guard moved in Saturday, Feb. 1, quarters were so completely equipped and ready that training was begun the following Monday, Gen. Tyndall said. “Duplication of such progress in other training-center areas,” Gen. Tyndall said, “will mean a tremendous saving of time in pushing the nation-wide defense program.” The camp is occupied by the 38th
at which they can’t possible sustain themselves. The bill provides for a self-policing setup. Employees who are not paid 25 cents an hoyr are to turn in their complaint§to the State Labor Department, “which can investigate and file court action to force the employers to pay the minimum scale.
DeWeese Move Defeated
Earlier, a move by Senator Arthur DeWeese (R. Ft. Wayne) to reconsider the workmen's compensation liberalization bill which passed the Senate last week, was defeated. He declared that as Labor Committee chairman he had not had a chance to study the amendments which ‘were written into the measure just before final passage. An amendment giving Governor

Division, composed of National Guard troops from Indiana, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky, and by the 37th Division, composed of Ohio National Guard troops, under Maj. Gen. Robert S. Beightler. The 1917 edition of Camp Shelby was no such thing, however. Col. Norman A. Nicolai, Gen. Tyndall's Chief of Staff, trained in that camp and recalls training in the 1917 camp and painted a striking contrast between then. and now.
Schricker full control ove the size of the proposed Indiana State Guard was written into the Home Guard Bill in the Senate today. Senator Roger Phillips, Democratic floor ‘leader, introduced the
1000-men limitation on the guard placed in the bill by Republicans. Senator Phillips said that at first “I didn’t mind the limitation, but then I got to thinking that in case | an emergency does arise we are | limiting the number of men that can be used to 1000.”
Says U, S. Troops Could Be Asked
Senator Ben Herr (R. Lebanon) said that the idea in limiting the size of the force was that Federal troops could be used in case larger protection is needed. “I cannot see any justification at all for a Home Guard,” remarked Senator Albert Beveridge (R. Indianapolis). “I can foresee no emer-
eral troops could not be used.” The bill, which carries a $50,000 appropriation, is one step from final passage in the Senate and then must be approved by the House.

with gas until I hated to eat at all, My bowels were so sluggish I. could seldom ever get a movement without/ taking harsh purgatives, and toxic poisoning caused pains and aches throughout my body. I was too nervous to get much restful sleep and I finally got to where I was so weak and had such severe pains in my arms, legs, and back I had to lie down a part of every day. “Retonga brought me grand relief! I am now able to eat heartily without fear of indigestion or gas, and I have no need for harsh purgatives. I sleep and rest fine, and feel better and stronger than in years. Retonga certainly deserves the highest praise I can give if.” Such grateful testimony speaks for itself. Retonga is a purely herbal medicine combined with Vitamin B-1, and is intended. to increase the flow of stomach digestive juices, help nature remove toxic wastes from the bowels, and tone nerves, strength and digestion. Thousands praise it, hundreds of them your neighbors and - friends right here in Indianapolis. Accept no substitute. Retonga may be obtained at all Hook’s Dependable
