"GOOD MUSIC" By James Thrasher

There will be another special concert tonight to close the National ‘Testimonial Week honoring Ignace Jan Paderewski on the 50th anniversary of his American debut. Nicolai Berezowsky has arranged an all-Polish program, which will be presented by Miecio Horozowski, pianist; Hubert Hendrie, baritone, accompanied by Vera Brodsky, and the Columbia Concert Orchestra, with Mr, Berezowsky conducting. The broadcast will be at 6:30 o'clock on CBS stations (not WFBM, however). Mr, Paderewski will be listening in the stydios of WJNO, the CBS station at West Palm Beach, Fla. Following the broadcast he will be Yrésented with transeriptions of the broadcast music in ceremonies at the station. The program includes the Overture to Moniuszko’s ‘“Halka” the Chopin “Military” Polonaise, by the orchestra; a group of Paderewski songs by Mr. Hendrie, and the aged composer-pianist’s Theme and Variations, played by Mr. Horozowski. : ” ” ” A new contemporary work will lend spice to a program which John Barbirolli has already supplied with novelties for the New York Philharmonic - Symphony Orchestra's CBS-WFBM broadcast tomorrow. It is a piano concerto written by Mischa Portnoff, dedicated to Mr. Barbirolli and played by Nadia Reisnberg. : Miss Reisnberg also will be heard in a performance of the Liszt Concerto No. 2 in A Major, a work so neglected at the expense of the 'E

Flat Concerto as to make it almost a novelty. Also on the program are

RADIO

Delius’ “Hassen.” In fact, the only “war horse” is Weber's .‘Freischuetz” Overture, which will open the con-

cert. » ” »

Erno Rapee will conduct the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra in another composition .by Richard Mohaupt on tomorrow morning's NBC-Blue broadcast. Mr. Mohaupt is the German composer who was invited to leave the Reich. after writing a satirical opera called “The Landlady of Pinsk,” which poked some fun at the Nazi military. His music has been heard on the Radio City hour once before. But tomorrow's work, called Valse Caprice, was commissioned ky Mr. Rapee. It is, according to the publicity notes, a satire on the waltzes of the Strausses, Johann Sr. and Jr. and Josef. It isn’t that Mr. Mohaupt doesn’t like ' Strauss waltzes, we are assured. But he sees in them symbols of an artificial and smug, although charming, age which laid the unhappy ‘foundations for 1914 and beyond. ” ”» ” The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will repeat two-thirds of the all-Brahms program of last night when Fabien Sevitzky conducts the weekly broadcast on CBSWFBM at 9:30 a. m. tomorrow. Included will be the Variations on a Theme by Haydn and the Hungarian Dances Nos. 1-6. ” » ” Gladys Swarthout, who will sing at English’s on the Martens course Thursday night, is to appear as soloist with Eugene Ormandy and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra tomorrow evening on CBS-WFBM. The brunet mezzo soprano was to have sung here in January, but illness made the postponement to this week necessary. This is definitely a time for musical observances, so Miss Swarthout will sing one song tomorrow night as a salute to National Brotherhood Week, sponsored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews. It is the “Hallelujah” by the late Cantor Joseph Rosenblatt. Also listed among her solos are “Ombra mai fu” from Handel's “Xerxes” (the famous Largo): “Tenting Tonight on the Old Camp Ground,” and the aria, “Amour, viens aider” from Saint- Saens’

the Prelude se Serenade from ”

Y. M. 255 OVER TOP IN MEMBER DRIVE

The Y. M. C. A, which started out 11 days ago to gain 745 new members, wound up last night 255 over that figure. When the final check was made last night, 999 new members had been obtained. So, in order to make it an even thousand, Clayton Mogg, general chairman of the drive, turned in his own membership for the Y. M. C. A. Health Club. Last night's “victory banquet,” which was attended by 125 men, brought a report of 353 new memberships. Fermor S. Cannon, Y, M. C. A. president, told the workers that the ,campaign was a “grand success” and that they had done more for the organization than just get new members.
