Typo Bowling Records Fall
Singles, Two-Man Play Starts Today
With two records already smashegq, bowlers in the Union Printing Crafts Tri-State Bowling Congress launched a new assault on standing marks today at the Pritchett and Pennsylvania Alleys. > Today, the second day of the tourhament, was to be devoted to singles and two-man competition, with Johnny Fehr and Lee Carmin, two local pin-smashers, seeking to defend their title in the tandem event. The first record was cracked yesterday by the Whistle Soda fourman club, which tallied a fat 2516 series to better by 61 pins the mark of 2455 recorded by Linsz Recreation of Cleveland last year. The Whistle quartet had games of 808, 853 and 855. Chief men in the Whistle attack were Maurice Wellman, who combined individual games of 228, 219 and 245 for a 692, and Norval Ward, whose 185, 220 and 245 added up to 650. The second record was set by the Cornelius Printing Co., with a 939 for a single game. This high total gave Cornelius a 2504 total and second place in Class A. In Class B the Horizontals rolled a high 2027 series and were followed by Bubble Up, with 2013. The Class C leaders were Newspaper Pressmen No. 37, No. 2 with a 1906. Second place went to Typo Union No. 1, 1, with an 1836.

» HEAVY VERTICAL traffic through Circle Tower's elevator shafts today was to bring the I. H S. A. A. board of control and the press to Room 812, the association’s nerve center. Here the board was to shuffle and pick out more than 700 white cards that represent the same number of high school teams—all this being the method of telling who will play whom and when in the tournament opening next week. The pairings were to be rushed to Miss Lucille Rector in the outer office, where she was to put all the information on paper. At 8:30 a. m. tomorrow the pairings become public property. It's all yours then in all editions of The Times. 2 = = RIVALRY When day is done and shadows fall, Two rivals meet in basketball; Each year they meet—Southport and Decatur— : And decide who is the dominator.
This year they will play in the Southport gym; They say the Cardinals’ chances are slim, But Decatur was walloped by the Giants And Southport took Ben Davis in silent defiance.
gym will be crowded and thoroughly packed And we know that Decatur will be well backed; However, the Cardinals will hear their cheers, But we don’t want Decature to hear any jeers.
At the half comes our marching band, Whose inspiring music deserves a good hand; Then the teams come out on the floor, Ready to do-or-die to boost their score,
The
After the struggle and the smoke clears away Down in defeat one will lay, Decatur or Southport, one does net know— Be there is person and see the show. JOHN CATTERSON. » # »
Indiana on His Mind
FRED HILL, publicity man for the University of Kentucky athletic department, has this to say under a Louisville date line: “If the University of Alabama wins the Southeastern Conference basketball tournament, coming here on Feb. 27, 28 and March 1, its coach, Hank Crisp, is going to march across the river into Indiana and pay personal tribute to that patron state of basketball. “Three years ago Hank was lucky enough to have two Indianans report for his squad. Today they have blossomed into two of his stars. Their names are Johnny Hines and Jim Roth. “John and Jim, the Capstone’s current Damon and Pythian boys, both hail from Ft. Wayne. “Until Johnny became tied up behind the Tide's great Louis Adair this year it has been Roth and Hines at the starting posts for Bana. Now Hank Crisp has had to break the combine in favor of Adair; nevertheless Johnny is too valuable a man to keep on the’ bench very long. He has become Alabama’s best reserve. “Back when he was a junior in high school Johnny won the Northeastern Indiana’ Conference scoring title. “Roth was once the high point man in a game with only one field goal. He made nine out of 10 four shots, however. And oppon-! ‘ents will tell you he still Mg that same uncanny eye. “Incidentally, these boys will be good for only one more season, so Indianans take note: Coach Hank Crisp of Alabama kindly petitions the city of Ft. Wayne, State of Indiana, to drop: him two more basketball players just anywhere ne the same class in which he Y/rates Roth and Hines. | He'll have his umbrella ready, for they'll be pennies from Heaven.”
EVERY TIRE
‘might begin to tell on Rice.
Fenske, unable to win a mile start, this season, dropped out with three laps to go in the N. Y. A, C. Games last week, and wrote A. A. U. Secretary Dan Ferris that he would be unable to compete this week because of illness. “Constant colds have gradually reduced my resistance until it now is at low ebb,” Fenske wrote. That leaves the three-mile affair, with Cireg Rice, pint-sized Notre Dame record-holder, and his perennial rival, Don Lash, Indiana State policeman the chief entrants, as the putstanding event of the A. A. 'U. meet. Lash hoped that the strain of his 8:53.4 two-mile effort last week Don anhounced that he had purposely stayed out of the N. Y. A. C. twomile so as to be in condition for this meeting -and, because of the longar distance, might be able to defeat the Notre Dame alumnus,
today, ‘and you can’t tell me that Rice doesn’t feel all that running he's been doing this year. I hope he
does, e enyhow. »
Big 3 Heading For Tracks
All of Indiana’s “Big Three” have
indoor track engagements his week-¢ nd, Notre Dame and 8 a meeting at Bloomington and Purdue traveling to Iowa City to compete against Iowa and Northwestern in a thres-way meet. The Hoosier-Irish carnival is expected to be a hot one, with a keen race expected in the mile relay. Both schools will have strong entrants in the shot put, and Notre Dame is banking on Oliver Hunter to! match the Hoosier stars in the distance events. Purdue's bid will be intrusted to Cap. Ed Holderman, Big Ten outdoor two-mile titleholder making his first indoor start of the season: Forest Weber, entrant in the shor put, and Dave Rankin, crack hurdler. Seventeen other Boilermaker thinlies made the trip with Coach Herman Phillips.
