WAR MAY SPEED PLASTIC AUTOS
Shortage of Steel Due to Defense Held Reason; No Paint Needed.
A steel shortage because of defense may result in ‘automobiles being made of entirely new materials, probably plastics, in the opin-
ion of George W. Walker, Detroit
. Industrial designer. Already there is a strong movement to replace steel in auto bodies with plastic materials, if the need arises. A Ford research scientist recently said that plastic-bodied cars “soon” will be produced by Ford. Mr. Ford, whose plastic molding plant annually converts 21,375 tons of soy beans, is anxious to find new uses for farm products. Approximately 280 pounds of farm products go into every Ford now and there would ‘be 200 pounds more if. plastics replaced sheet metal.
No ‘Paint Job’ Necessary
A virtue of the plastic car, besides "its safety, would be its durability and the fact that no. “paint job” would be necessary, Mr. Walker predicts. Cars could be produced in an almost limitless range of colors. Even now, makers of plastic materials can produce thousands of different shades and hues. Because color is an inherent part of the plastic, molded right into it, there will be no danger of chipping or fading. Recently, Mr. Ford swung an axe against the surface of an experimental plastic car without denting or marring the surface.
Lighter and Faster
With the paint job eliminated, the buyer will pay less and the plastic body will be less expensive than all-metal. Also it will be lighter so that the motorist ‘can travel both faster and more eco- - nomically, Mr. Walker says. A strong safety factor will be the new “plastic glass,” a synthetic “Glass” already developed, which can be molded in curves and is unshatterable and nearly unbreakable.

Nash Sales Advanca
Residents of the Indianapolis area bought 67 per cent more new Nashs during January than they did in the same month last year accord-
jing to H. W. Kramm, head of Nash Motors of Indianapolis, branch of the Nash-Kelvinator Corp., 528-34 8S. Meridian St. ; Mr. Kramm attributed the sharp increase i the general business upswing and to the entry of Nash Motors into the lowest-price market. “According to trade authorities,” he said, “during the last year about 800,000 persons who had never before owned an auto bought used

TIRE DEALERS HOLD SESSION ON MONDAY
A merchandising conference for some 300 tire dealers in this area of the Cincinnati district of the B. F. Goodrich Co. will be held at 6 p. m. Monday in the Hotel Lin-
coln. Conference highlights will include the unveiling of the Goodrich 1941 tire and automotive ac-
cessory lines and a discussion of the rubber industry’s role in the national defense program. A special feature will be a demonstration of how Ameripol, the new synthetic ‘rubber, is made, according to Mark O. Ward, district manager. Ameripol is being made into passenger car tires and is also being used in many oil and heat resisting articles such as hose, tubing and molded goods. Besides Mr. Ward, speakers will be S. PF. Daily, district sales manager; J. N. Davis, sales promotion and advertising manager, and R. C. White, truck and bus tire manager.
