“THURSDAY, FEB. 20, STRIKES HIT 20 DEFENSE PLANTS
Situation Not Serious Yet, =: Chiefs Say; January Output at Peak.
; By UNITED PRESS “Twenty disputes were in progress today in national defense industries, but Government production offieials testifying before a Congresgional committee said the situation was not ‘serious enough yet to warrant legislation prohibiting strikes. Most of the nation’s workers, however, were at their benches. "Defense Production Director William 8. Knudsen announced that deliveries of military aircraft hit a new peace-time peak during January and ‘other sources revealed plans are being studied for further expansion of production facilities.
Called Unimportant
»Mr. Knudsen told ‘the House Judiciary Committee strikes had caused some delays in defense production but that they were not important. He predicted settlement soon of the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. strike at Milwaukee, Wis., largest of the walkouts. However, two union representa“tives at the Allis-Chalmer conferences charged the company did not intend to yield to an all-union shop. One union executive said the 7800 United Automobile Workers’ (C. I. 0.) Union strikers at Milwaukee would be “joined by as many more from Allis-Chalmers plants all over the country” if the " eompany persisted in its attitude.
3 Plants Struck
Workers at the McCormick tractor plant of the International Harvester Co. at Chicago voted to join Farm Equipment Workers’ Organizing Committee (C. I. O.) members on strike at three other Harvester plants. The Harvester tractor plant at Chicago and the Rock Falls, Ill, and Richmond, Ind. plants still were closed by strikes.
