Movie Stars' "Pearls of Wisdom NevereMissed by Publicity Men
By JAMES THRASHER
ACCORDING to the corps of faithful Hollywood Boswells, the great and the glamorous spend their days emoting and engineering prace-
tical jokes on the sets,
and their nights in playing backgammon and
gin rummy, inventing perpetual motion machines, inventing a great
many other things, putting in
house in the San Fernando Valley (not a palatial hideout,
ranch which must pay its way). * But the Boswells also give us to understand that there are occasional pauses in the day's occupation- for the stars and directors. At such times, it seems they are given to reflection upon life, art and things in general. And because the faithful scribes seem always to be on hand to catch these pearls of wisdom, this ' department is able to pass along to you some of these thought- . provoking reflections. . » ” » HEDY LAMARR: “Put your makeup on in a hurry and it generally looks twice as good as if you had fussed with it for hours. I learned this only after months of trial and errors. The more time I took the worse I looked. “Pussing with makeup makes women nervous. Nervousness spoils tranquility, and lack of tranquility spoils beauty. It’s a vicious circle.” CY FEUER, head of Republic's music department: “Judy Canova hasn’t an absolutely cultured voice, but she has maintained a sort of untouched, back-home quality.” LARRY, CEBALLOS, directing ' dances for James Roosevelt's “Pot 1 ©'Gold”: “I can tell a girl’s character and mentality by the shape ' of ‘her legs. And I don’t have to submit her to a foolish question test such as ‘Why does a hen cross the road?’ : “Any chorus girl, after a year in the show game, knows why a hen crosses the road.”

the news that Shirley Temple was |
emerging from retirement to work for M-G-M made Page One of this and a good many other newse papers throughout the country. Finally, in a release dated Feb. 14, came the first mention of Shirley in M-G-M publicity. The news of the Marvel Moppet's return to the screen appeared brief=ly on the second.page of a gene eral roundup, midway in a para= graph of miscellaneous items. ” ” ”
THE LONDON engagement of “Gone With the Wind” is now in its 53d week. With all due credit to everyone concerned, it appears that part of the popularity is due to the fact that it’s playing a theater which is below street level, and is considered one of London's better air raid shelters.

RKO REPORTS that Alfred Hitchcock is returning to the di-« rection of mystery pictures with the forthcoming “Before Fact,” which will star Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine. The rotund Britisher’s first Hollywood-made comedy—the re: cent “Mr. and Mrs. Smith’— served mainly to emphasize the fact that Mr. Hitchcock is still the cinema’s chief master of suspense and thrills. ” ” 2 ONE OF THE choicer typo. graphical slips turned up the other day in a Denver newspaper movi? ad: “Déanna Durbin and Nan Grey in ‘Three Smart Girls Frow Up.'"”

Boy loses girl; boy gets girl—It’s an old movie custom, but in “Virginia” (which comes to the Circle Friday) it happens all at once, as shown above, Sterling Hayden nobly bids farewell to the lovely Made-

May Festival |s Postponed
‘Alarming Conditions’ Are Held Responsible.
CINCINNATI, O., Feb. 19 (U. P.). ~-For the first time in its 68-year existence, Cincinnati’s renowned May Music Festival will not be held
as scheduled in 1941, A statement of postponement adopted by the board of the Cincinnati Musical Festival Association, Inc, was read to a chorus which has been in rehearsal for the scheduled event for more than a
year. i The statement declared that “present alarming world and national conditions hold out no reasonable hope that we could give the Pestival for' 1941 without incurring another deficit,” The Festival normally is held ¢very two years. On two occasions in the past 68 years there have been three-year lapses between events. : The board said that “with the hope for settlement of present disturbed conditions,” it expected to hold the Festival again in 1942.

Esquire Film Heads Toward Record; Extent of Tacoma Damage Uncertain
By DAVID MARSHALL
JUST BETWEEN YOU AND ME and the fellow at the next desk, “Night Train”—which is breaking records in New York and Baltimore— is about to do the same at the Esquire. The North Side house's record is 18 days (not consecutive) of
“Four’s ‘a Crowd” and “That Certain Woman.”
Tonight is the 15th
day for “Night Train” at the Esky and, while the management won't
come right out and say so, we'll bet two glamour shots of Marlene Dietrich against a dozen of (name YOUR favorite actress) that the record at least will be equalled this week. ” ” #
THE HAMILTON tonight opens a three-day first neighborhood showing of “The Devil's Pipeline,” which will be coupled with “Trail of the Vigilantes.” “Pipeline” is a comedy-drama about two investigators for an oil firm—Andy Devine and Richard Arlen—who are sent to a South Seas branch after a secretary there notes “send help” in shorthand on the interoffice mail. ” ” ”
. IT’S TOO EARLY to tell just how much damage the fire, smoke and water did at the Tacoma Monday night. Estimates run all the way from a couple of weeks until a month on a reopening date. However, you'll soon see workmen ‘scurrying around and’ when it does reopen it will be with an entirely new front and lobby. ‘ ” ” » TONIGHT’S THE last night for the Sheridan’s super-horror show —“Chamber of Horrors,” “Phantom of Chinatown” and a creepy cartoon, “Ghost Wanted.”
» MH ®
FOR THE PARKER'S remaining family nights today and tomorrow a revival, “Johnny Apollo,” with Dorothy Lamour and Tyrone Power, is billed with a Wester—oops! sorry—an “outdoor action picture,” George O’Brien in “Triple Justice.”

4th Orchestra Concert To Be Friday.
For the fourth’ of its special evening concert series, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will present an all-Brahms program at the Murat on Friday night at 8:30 o'clock. it Yabien Sevitzky has chosen a representative program which includes the Variations on a Theme by Haydn, the Symphony No. 1 in C Minor and six of the Hungarian Dances. ; The Hungarian Dances were added to the originally scheduled program in place of the Violin Concerto. Adolf Busch, who had been engaged as soloist, was forced to cancel the remainder of his season’s engagements because of illness.
Something of Novelty
Only two of- the Hungarian Dances are played very frequently
| by symphony orchestras, so the in-
clusion of six on one program is something of a novelty. The music of the Hungarian Gypsies and Magyars fascinated Brahms as it has many other composers, from Haydn and Schubert to Bartok, Kodaly and Dohnanyi of the present day. Brahms tened to these folk dances played by Hungarian bands, assembled them in four books of four-hand piano arrange-
‘ments, and later scored many of
them for orchestra. Mr. Sevitzky, incidentally, has revised the orchestration to’ some extent for Priday’s performance. His alterations consist mainly of doubling of brass and woodwind
parts. ‘Other Works Familiar The other two Works on the program are standard and familiar items of the startdard orchestra repertory. The Haydn Variations, like the
piano arrangement—or, more accurately, an arrangement for two pianos. The theme itself is the St. Anthony Chorale, originally scored by Haydn for wind instruments. ;
