Orr THE
BACKBOARD
By J. E. O'BRIEN
LAFAYETTE, Ind., Feb. 18. —If the Court please,
Purdue University would like to ask the Badgers of Wisconsin why they can’t win or lose their games down here
within the time limits set by law: you'll remember, the football Badgers
forced the fans to sit around in Ross-Ade Stadium when
Last fall,
they should have been on their way home while an extra point was kicked and the Boilermakers beaten. Again last night the basketball Badgers actually won and kept themselves atop the Big Ten heap after the popgun had had its last pop. But please don’t regard this as a criticism of Purdue’s Don Blemker, who missed the first of two free throws after the clock had run out to provide the dancing and bear-hugging Badgers with a 43-42 victory. Don was oh the spot—too tough a spot for any youngster. But he was confident—as confident as anybody in the Purdue Field-: house. He said so afterward. “I didn’t have the least bit of doubt that I could make both of those. I was in the same situation when I was playing for Huntingburg. It was over at Vincennes. The only difference was that I made both of those.”

Wisconsin's Coach Bud Foster isn’t scared of the Indiana Fireball Five. He gave us to understand before last night's game that anybody can win at Bloomington next Monday night. But he confessed that an Ohio State victory over the Hoosiers would have made him sleep better this week, ” n ”
WISCONSIN WASN'T in command last night until Kotz - jammed in a rebound midway in the second period to give the Badgers a 34-33 lead. It was
give-and-take the rest of the way, with the score being tied six times and the lead changing hands the same number of times. When Wisconsin led, 36-35, Blemker shoveled a goal from below that wag disallowed. The officials thought he deserved a free shot and nothing more, Piggy Lambert went to the officials’ table on that one and as much as told Mr. Ike Oraiz he should see an oculist. ”
It was generally agreed that had the Boilermakers made one more field goal when they had the visitors on the short end of a 16-6 score, the -ball game would have been over right there.
» »
BOB IGNEY wanted to play last night and told Coach Piggy hig knee felt fine. But Piggy wouldn't take the chance, so Igney sat on the bench until the -final minute. He got two cracks at the bucket during his short stay on the boards. Bob Riley came out of a sick bed and minimized his cold and sore throat 80 he wouldn't be benched.
” ” » LAMBERT'S surprise for the Boilermakers was the zone defense he had perfected since Purdue’s earlier visit to Madison. It was intended to annoy big Gene Englund.
» s
=
8 » s
. The Badger party was much impressed by Blemker and Charles Caress. “Give us two guys like “that to bring the ball up the floor,” said the Madison gentleman on our left, “and we could take anybody.” He was, we suppose, including the Fireball Five.

| At City Hall—
ONCE A BOARD
HEAD, ALWAYS
City Won’t Let 0’Connor Leave Either; Land Sale Refused.
When it comes to electing officers, City Hall administrative boards display a peculiar inertia. The tendency is to find someone who is willing to serve as president and keep him in the job as long as he will stay. This was demonstrated by the Park Board last week when Jackiel ‘W. Joseph was re-elected president for his 11th term. On the Works Board, Louis C. Brandt has been president four years and his colleagues won’t hear of letting him
step down.
Following this pattern, the ZonBoard yesterday re-elected George T. O'Connor president and George T. Wheldon vice president.
|All present committees were re- || tained.
No One Else Wants It
There wasn’t any contest. Nobody else appeared even to entertain the idea that anyone else; should be president of the Board but Mr, O’Connor, and the tall
iron-gray-haired businessman accepted his lot without complaint. Beforé the Zoning Board in the
irole of petitioner yesterday, came
the City of Indianapolis to seek a variance permit. But the City was turned down—by the City. Safety Board President Leroy J. Keach told Zoning Board members that the City has an opportunity to sell a plot of municipally owned ground at the southeast corner of Hawthorne Lane and E. Washington St. for a filling station location. The site was acquired 12 years ago for a fire station which never materialized. For years the land had attracted no buyer until recently, Mr. Keach said.
Owners Protest
His words implied that here was a golden opportunity for the City to convert some real estate into badly needed cash. j Property owners stepped forward to protest. They didn’t want a gas station, they told the Board. It would depreciate residential property values, cause a nuisance, they said. Zoning Board members sadly shook their heads. The City turned down the City unanimously. The concern which proposed to operate the filling station on this and two other sites was the Superior Oil Co. of Louisville, Ky. The company was granted a variance to erect
toa station at the southwest corner
of 10th and Station Sts., but its request to build another at the southeast corner of Northwestern Ave. and Udell St. was postponed.
Postpone Tank Petition
Also postponed for further study was the petition of the Site Oil Co. of St. Louis, which propcsed to erect
storage tanks at the northwest corner of 14th and West Sts. The cost of erection would be about $3000. The Board granted petitions for a beauty shop in the basement of a residence at 4902 Kings'ey Dr.; erecion of a storeroom at 1917 E. 46th ; operation of an auto sales lot
[>t 935-47 Madison Ave.
Construction of a double house at 3015 Colorado Ave. and another double at 6608-10 E. Washington St.,
{and a filling station at the south-
west corner of Kenwood Ave. and 38th St. Denied were petitions for a storeroom at 833-37 English Ave. and & double house at 28 E. 62d St.
