HOUSE INVESTIGATES LEASED NAVY BASES

WASHINGTON, Feb. 17.—Chairman Carl Vinson (D. Ga.) of the House Naval Affairs Committee has delegated a subcommittee to inquire at the Navy Department about the base sites which the United States acquired on British possessions in the Atlantic and Caribbean in exchange for 50 destroyers last August. The subcommittee includes Reps. Patrick Drewry (D. Va.) and W. Sterling Cole (R. N. Y.). It is assumed they will go into rumors brought privately to the attention of Congress that the Navy has in some cases been offered poor locations at high prices, requiring large expenditure - to make them suitable for naval purposes. These reports involve particularly Bermuda and Trinidad. The growing secrecy about Army and Navy activities covers all questions about the negotiations over base sites, so it is impossible to de- - termine just how well the Government is faring in this deal with Great Britain. Outright purchase, rather than 99-year leases of base sites, is regarded by many Congressmen as a more practical means of helping Great Britain and of protecting our own national defense.

MRS. IDA C. MALPAS SERVICES TOMORROW

Mrs. Ida C. Malpas, who died yesterday at her home, 222 E. 21st St., will be buried in Crown Hill following services at 3:30 p. m. tomorrow in the Flanner & Buchanan Mortuary. She was the widow of Dr. S. H. Malpas who died 10 years ago. Mrs. Malpas was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis and lived at the 21st St. address most of her life. She had been a member of the Altenheim of Indianapolis several years. Surviving is a brother, Charles "Bieler, off Indianapolis.

PROGRAM TO FOLLOW REPORT ON SURVEY

When Miss Sarolyn Gillespie finishes the religious survey she is making in Charlestown, Ind. and the vicinity, the Indianapolis "Episcopal Diocese is to launch a program of work based on her findings. Miss Gillespie goes about among the many people living in trailers and other temporary quarters in the neighborhood of the powder plant in a car presented the diocese for her use. Miss 'Gillespie’s headquar:ters are in Indianapolis and her title is field worker for the diocesan House of Churchwomen.

SUSPECT IN SHRIVER DEATH ASKS BAIL

A bail petition for Oscar Johnson, 32-year-old Indianapolis man accused in the death of John Shriver, was filed today in Criminal Court. The petition is based on the contention that since a Criminal Court jury last week failed to reach a verdict in Johnson’s trial there is some doubt of his guilt.
