THE PERSPIRING PROGNOSTICATOR

‘The day is coming when selections are made, When the state champ is named—a coffin laid; O Fates, be kind, give -me a Sign; Lady . Luck—Be my valentine!

hl A FORTNIGHT ago we listed what we considered the 10 best “high school teams we've set eyes on this season.

At that time we

"hadn't been south, and there was a shortage of downstate representa-

“tives on the roll.

And we promptly were informed of this oversight |

“from readers below Road 40. Today we're printing a revised list and

believe it is more representative. drawn just ‘from those 30-odd {teams we’ve seen and is based on ithe teams’ performances the eve= ‘ning or afternoon we saw them. This is it: 1, South Bend Central | 2. Hammond Tech. ~| 3. Anderson, “| 4. Jasper. | 5. Muncie Burris. | 6. Columbus, 7. Shortridge. -| 8. New Castle. <9. Evansville Central. " 10. Technical.

Then There’s Flora

PRESENTING FLORA, winner of nine straight and unbeaten since Dec. 20. . . . With a record to date of 15 victories in 19 starts. . . . Ralph Kifer does the Flora tutoring—he’s the fellow who put Lynnville on the basketball map. . . . Illness will keep Larry Gerlach out of Parks week-end game with Onarga M. S. here. . Oharga, incidentally, has dropped close games this season to Howe M. A. and Elgin and lost to St. John’s by 11 points , . . but bounced back recently to scalp Morgan Park. Willing to try anything, Coach Cliff Wells now practices his Logan Berries in secret. . . . Johnny Howe of South Bend Washington says LaPorte’s Larry Mansfield is the most dangerous forward he’s seen. , . . Mansfield specializes in long push shots , . . . We'll be ready to pick our state champion after we take a peek at Waashington’s Hatchets this evening at Greencastle. You don’t suppose they'll get the nod again do you? : ® ”

“And why don’t you send your girl a valentine?” the backward forward was asked, “Because I haven't the heart.”

be the man without a guard, and he slapped No. 1 into the fishnet. Twice later in the period the Hoosiers had an advantage in numbers, [but were unsuccessful, The Capitals’ first goal was a neat bit of | teamplay involving Jack Keating and Hec Kilrea of the Kay line and husky Doug McCaig. Keating’s line drive was blocked and as the plick came bouncing oul, MecCaig served it to Hec, whose ensuing shat rippled the meshes. Then came that third period. A Brown-lo-McDonald play banged off the post, and ‘twas shortly after this that Kaminsky did his one-man sneak job. They had to unwrap Robertson a couple of times to find the puck, but there wasn’t any getting past him, not even after Lewis had loosed his 10 forwards. No Valentine candy for the Capitals, please. They're whetting their appetite for Hershey B’ars. The summary:

At LaPorte, the Eastern NIHSC | & crown goes on the block: ‘as the Slicers and South Bend Central

‘ftangle in the big civic auditorium. |__

Central, closing its conference season, needs this game to take the trophy. Books of the South Central conference probably will be closed and the flag handed to Columbus as the Bulldogs meet Seymour. Only an improbable loss to the Owls and Greencastle would force Columbus to split the title with Shelbyville. In the Central conference Muncie Burris, of course, track by the simple expedient of being unbeaten in league play. It will endeavor to remain so against Peru, no mean task. An enterprising fan aided by Albert Einstein and flanked by a flock of statisticians might figure out which team will emerge with the. Southern crown. Jasper leads the league in percentage, but. that’s no criterion because of the point system of declaring a winner, It appears that Vincennes, holding second spot, has the inside

track by virtue of more victories |FOR

over higher-bracket clubs. The Alices can improve their position tonight against Bloomington, and probably will. Jasper, however, and another Southern powerhouse, Washington, look for laurels outside the league in meeting Martinsville and Greencastle, respectively. Among the more potent state teams, Anderson invades New Castle, Bluffton plays at Ft. Wayne Northside and Greensburg visits Madison.
