As Italy’s Master.

‘WASHINGTON, Feb. 14.—Reports of Italian peace negotiations are discounted here as premature. But future possibilities are not ruled out.

While they are watching the situation closely, the skeptical attitude of Washington officials reflects the ‘following factors: This Government has not been informed, much less consulted, regarding any peace negotiations. It is aware of Italy’s desire to obtain safe passage of civilijans from the Ethopian. war zone, which may be the source of more sweeping reports. But that Mr. Denny Britain’ would discuss armistice or peace terms * without Washington consultation is most improbable. There is as yet no definite indica+ tion that Mussolini wants to stop the war, though there are plenty of signs that his Army and people have had enough. To admit defeat doubtless would mean the end of his rule. + If so; he personally has nothing more to lose by playing out the * string on the slim chance of victory.

No Longer Diclator

Camp Shelby, Miss. Sergt. Reid left by train this week. He was supposed § to have gone # Jan. 29 on the I n d ianapolis troop train : which was gergt. Reid wrecked in Mississippi injuring 20 of his fellow troopers. The reason he wasn’t on the train was a broken jaw suffered in a basketball game on Friday, ' Dec. 13th. He was in the hospital for. a week and then confined to his home. Army doctors gave him an o. k. this week and he left to join Headquarters Company of the 151st Infantry.

COLLEGE TO OFFER MARRIAGE COURSE

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. Feb. 14 (U. P.).—Officials of Wilson College, one of the oldest institutions of higher learning for young women in the country, decided that since more- than 60 per cent of the

graduates “eventually” marry, @ “marriage course” would be in order. Dean Margaret C. Disert said a series of lectures enttiled “An Intelligent Approach to Marriage,” would be inaugurated. She said the. lectures, which were designed “to complement each other and present a many-sided picture of matrimony,” would ' include such topics as eugenics, budget systems, psychology of matrimony, and civic and family responsibilities.

Churchill's unorthodox diplomacy in thus publicly insulting the weakened enemy, who might otherwise be ready to desert, apparently is based on the assumption that Mussolini lacks the power to betray Hitler effectively. If Il Duce made a . backstairs deal with Churchill for peace, just how would he get rid of ‘the Nazi Army of occupation in Italy? . Moreover, Churchill is gambling heavily on Italian hatred of Germany and Germans. Although Mussolini was not strong enough to slip ‘through Hitler's embrace of death, the Italian people may be. Unlike Mussolini—whose personal future, small as it is, rests with Hitler—Italy can only lose if Hitler wins; it would remain the German protectorate and colony, which. it became last month with Nazi mili‘tary occupation.
