Orr THE BACKBOARD

By J. E. O'BRIEN

FROM THE looks of things, Butler and Indiana Central, our two crack hometown clubs, are going to finish their Indiana Conference schedules undefeated. Barring unforeseen and unpleasant happenings, the Greyhounds will close out with a record of 10 victories and no defeats,

while the Bulldogs will end with a spotless slate showing |

seven wins. Last year we had a crepe

suzette to top our regular

basketball bill of fare when Coach Tony Hinkle and some of the local press boys accepted the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s offer to hold the .eastern eliminations here. . Another such tournament here this year is out of the question, according to word received by Hinkle from Coach Harold Olsen of Ohio State, N. C. A. A. charge d’affairs. The eastern eliminations have to be played on Saturday, March 22, and that, friends, is the date when the Hoosier high school basketball field is given its final trimming at the Fieldhouse.

So, for us who like something big to climax things, why not a post-season meeting between Butler and Indiana Central at the ~ Fiéldhouse? If it doesn’t settle the question of Conference superiority (Evansville expects to be in the perfect circle at the finish, too), at least it would decide who’s best in the neighborhood and should bring in more than enough silver to pay the light bill. As for Evansville, Hinkle said last night he may get the Purple Aces into the 49th St. hangar in the next year or so.

ODDS AND ENDS. . . . Because of the building program at Decatur Central, tomorrow night's game with Mooresville will be played at the latter’s playhouse. . « « Did you know that Tech’s Harry Hagans ranks 10th among North Central scorers on his 80 points? . . . Dale Wright, former Greenwood star, won $680 recently, and his Franklin friends are daring him te bet it on the Woodmen in, the sectional. . . . Bluffton has clinched the Northeastern Indiana Conference crown. . . . : Muncie Central is reported ready to forfeit the games it won from New Castle, Marion and Lafayette between Jan. T and 17. « « « The word is that Herman Thresher, Bearcat guard, was a married man when he participated in these three, and benedicts are ruled out by the I.H, S. A. A.... If you're looking for a good state title possibility from the south, how about Madison, unbeaten in 13 Southeastern Conference skirmishes? ,... Although Hammond Tech has the title sewed up in the "western division of the NIHSC, theres a hot fight on for the runner-up spot. . Lew Wallace, Froebel and East Chicago Washington all claim it now on 8-and-5 records. . « Muff Davis, Elwood’s retired great, had a hitting average of 209 for his eight Central Indiana Conference games this season. e « « +» The Tournament now in progress is the City Recreation Department’s first big effort to get amateur basketball out of the woods in Indianapolis. . . Next year’s plans call for well-organ-ized leagues under the department’s supervision. .-. . And there’ll be one instead of three or four “city champions.” , +

Big Gun in Shore Defense

Eddie Shore, owner-manager of the Springfield Indians, still rates as one of hockey’s best defensemen and should know a good guard when he sees one, Frank Beisler (shown here) has been doing regular defense duty for Shore, so apparently he’s okeh by the: boss, Both Shore and Beisler will attempt to throttle our hockey ‘Capitals at the Coliseum this evening. Action starts at 8:30 o’clock.

The New York Renaissance professional basketball team, which is scheduled to meet the Indianapolis Kautskys at Butler Fieldhouse next Monday night, is one of the oldest aggregations displaying its wares on a hardwood court today. The team was organized 17 years ago by Bob Douglas, New York sportsman. Douglas still heads the team, acting as business manager. His annual schedule, usually drawn up during the . summer months, takes: the team to all parts of the nation, thousands of miles being covered in its winter jaunts. The schedule calls for so many out-of-town games that the team seldom appears on a New York City floor. At times they are forced to play a Sunday afternoon game in one city. and a night game in another, but they have never failed to put in their appearance as per

schedule. The team travels in a

special streamlined bus under the|

supervision of Eric Illige, traveling secretary. The annual tour takes the team into most of the big cities in the East and Middle West and several Indiana stops are usually included in their program. With no formidakle foes available in many towns of the state, the Kautskys usually arrange several games’ to give fans an opportunity to see the famed Negroes in action. Monday night's game at the Fieldhouse will be the Rens’ final local visit, although they are scheduled to tangle with the Kautskys at Lafayette and Peru before departing from Hoosier soil. Monday night’s game is scheduled to get. under way at 8:30 following the usual preliminary bétween twe
