Boy a Minority .of State’s
Times Special TERRE HAUTE, Feb. 18.—A minority of Indiana school’ superintendents favors: free A€Xtbooks, according to a survey made by Dr.
John :R. Shannon, director of re--
:. search at.Indiana State Teachers . College. * ‘Dr. Shannon circulated a ‘ques- _ tionnaire among school administra__tors asking their views on the con“troversial subject pending before the State Legislature, ~ ' The findings of the survey are to .be communicated to legislative leaders of both parties. On the pro--posal for free textbooks for ele- ~ mentary pupils, he found that 82 are in favor, 57 prefer rented books and 43 want to retain private ownership. If free textbooks should be provided, however, 109 are in favor of the State paying for them, 32 want the local corporations to pay, and 47 favor a plan of joint payment. In the choosing of, 39 want the State to do it, 41 want the choice to be made locally from State-approved lists, and three want the choice made locally without any State-approved list. The superintendents were more than six to one in favor of introducing free textbooks, if introduced at all, gradually instead of all at the same time.
