charged in with both hands and had Montgomery on the floor for a

three-count before sending him between the ropes and- out for the 10 count. Montgomery apparently forgot to watch the count because it looked like he failed to use enough speed in getting himself untangled out of the ropes while watching instructions from his corner. The “quickie” knockout of the evening was scored by John Douglas, Hill Community Center| Novice leatherweight, over Frank Tighe, Rhodius Community Center. John subdued his opponent in 1:11 of the first round. A surprise’ was in store for the fans when the Open class heavyweights entered the arena. They figured Horace Watson of Bloomington, Ind, would be easy sailing for Jethro Jeffers, Leeper Boxing School. boo

Makes Fight of It

But Watson showed plenty of courage ‘and made a fight of it until the referee stopped hostilities in the third round and awarded the honors to Jeffers by technical knockout. Watson absorbed so much punishment from body blows that the referee called a halt. Another bruising Open class match that pulled the sports goers out of their seats was between Billy Jones, Leeper Boxing School 160pounder, and Ernest Roache, Hill Community Center. These potent leather tossers put on a.real brawl and Jones won it: by technical knockout in the third round. Tt was a furious encounter from the start with Jones forcing the issue and with Roache trying to “end it all” with a righthanded wallop. He connected at times, but received more than he delivered and was stopping a lot of blows when the referee called it quits. The Open class welterweight clash between Arnold Deer, South Side Community Center, and Clinton Brooks, Leeper Boxing School, also was close and filled with fireworks. It was toe-to-toe and slambang in every session and that one bout produced enough action to satisfy the huge crowd for thrills and spectacular punching. Complete results of last night's tourney bouts:

For Mickey ey it isn’t enough that he’s Judge s son, the darling of a few million young feminine hearts, the movies’ boxoffice champion and one of the world’s ONeErs, | highest paid striplings. He has now stormed the citadel of the tonal

atimuse. Man the bastions, ye musical

immortals, the Boy Wonder is on his way up. Specifically, young Mr. Rooney is the accredited composer of two pieces which Wilfred Pelletier has included on the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s broade¢ast program for tomorrow night. They are called “Melody in Autumn” and “Humoresque,” and they are from a “new symphonic work,” says the publicity, which Mickey has titled “Melodante.” Whether Mickey, whose music accomplishments are rather limited to drum and boo-gie-woogie piano playing, actually did the scoring for full symphony orchestra is not stated. The only reason the writer mentions it is that he harbors a profound skepticism born of intimate acquaintance with Mickey Rooney movie pressagentry. Not to be anti-cmlimatic but the Detroiters program also have Nino Martini as guest soloist. He will sing, among other things,

The half-hour beginning at 9:30 a. m. will be given over to excerpts from Wagner music dramas: The Overture to “The Flying Dutchman,” the Prelude and Love Death from “Tristan and Isolde” and the Prelude to Act III of “Lohengrin.”

For the last of his four guest-con-ducting appearances with the New York Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra on CBS-WFBM tomorrow, Bruno Walter has chosen a program which has Strauss’ “Don Quixote” as the principal attraction. The cello soloist in these “Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character” will be Joseph Schuster, and the solo viola parts will be played by Zoltan Kurthy. Both men are members of the orchestra. Mr. Schuster has played the solo under the baton of Richard Strauss himself, as well as with such conductors as Furtwangler, Kleiber, Klemperer and Barbiroili. “Don Quixote” will take up the last part of the program. Preceding intermission, listéners are to oe Weber's “Oberon” Overture and the Mozart G Minor Symphony.

“Voi lo Sapete” from Mascagni’s 50-year-old favorite, “Cavalleria Rusticana,” will be the featured aria when Helen Traubel sings the Chicago Women’s Sym Orchestra, conducted by Izler Solomon, on CBS-WFBM at 4 p. m. tomorrow. The American dramatic soprano of the Metropolitan Opera also will
