McDermond Says Smali-Town Newspaper Must Win Affection of Its Community|

Small-fown publishers must organize and assume the duty of “ingratiating the newspaper in the life and "affections of the community it is serving,” ‘J. Frank McDermond Jr., president, told the Hoosier State Press Association here today.

The association opened its: annual two-day meeting. this morning at the Hotel Lincoln with 200 attending. Mr. McDermond, one of the charter. members when the association was formed eight years ago, derided the feeling among small town editors that their problems were any different from those facing any metropolitan newspaper. In his annual address, the Attica ‘publisher also attacked the Fed‘eral Wage and Hour Law as a bar- ~ rier to newspaper unity. “The law is another example of what happens when there is lack of unity, with a great profession _such as newspaper publishing torn “in two and divided int® classes by a law set up in a nation which is potentially opposed to class. legislation.” Mr, McDermond declared, however, that newspapers” haye “only ourselves to blame for the ecriticism which has been heaped upon us.” In his estimation, a smalltown newspaper should take a leading role in civic affairs and not merely sit back and “report.” He singled out newspapers in which “the entire staff is concerned more with what it can do to the Sommunliy than for the community.” At a luncheon today, the Hoosier editors were to hear Alfred O. Dowd, warden of the Indiana State Prison at Michigan City, and this afternoon was to be devoted to a news‘paper seminar. Mark Ethridge, vice president and general manager of the Louisville Courier Journal and Times, is to

The meeting will be directed by Wray E. Fleming, manager and general counsel of the ‘association. He is expected to report on g bill passed by the Indiana House and now in third reading in the Senate which would protect reporters from

of their information before juries and legislative committees. On the whole, the association has had little -to lobby for in the Legislature, Mr. Fleming said today. The Indiana Weekly Press Association will convene tomorrow morn=ing while the daily publishers discuss state and national problems. After that, Republicans among
