American Medical Association Anti-Trust Case Opens In Washington.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 5 (U, P.).— The unprecedented trial of the American Medical Association and some of the nation's most noted doctors on charges that they conspired to violate Federal anti-trust
laws opens today in U. S. District Court.
Proceedings are expected “0 con- (§ Govern- |;

that the A. M. A, two of its affili-|: ated organizations and 20 officers|}
sought to use the A. M. A.’s prestige

medicine.
The indictment also names the|. medical society of “the District of |:
Columbia, the Harris County (Tex.) Medical Society and the Washington Academy of Surgery.
Jury Selection First
A. M. A. officials named were Morris Fishbein, editor of the A. M. A. journal; Olin West, secretary and general manager of the A, M. A.: William Creighton Woodward, director of the A. M. A..Bureau of Legal Medicine and . Legislation; William Dick Cutter, secretary of the A. M. A. Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, anid Rosco Genung Leland, director of the A. M. A. Bureau of Medical Economics. The first day of the trial will be taken up with the selection of a 12-man jury and two alternates. John Henry. Lewin, chief Government prosecutor, and Grant W. Kelleher then will present their opening statements, to which defense counsel will reply. The defense statement probably will be made by Edward N. Burke, Chicago, A. M. A attor Be:
Charges Without Precedent
Charges against the associations and the doctors are without prece= dent in anti-trust history and reach the [trial “stage only after an unsuccessful court battle by the A. M. A. for a ruling that the practice of medicine is not a “trade” as conceived by the Sherman and Clayton Acts. The allegations of the Government arise from the A. M. A's purported policy to “hinder” the development of group health organ{zations which offer complete medical care on a risk-sharing basis.
