“Hitler Not at Our Door,’ They Argue; Urge 200 More State Police.

Republican Senate leaders have decided “that Adolf Hitler is not knocking at our door” and that hence there is no reason for a Home Guard. They have decided that the addition of 200 State Policemen -would

_ make that force adequate for the handling of all civilian defense matters at a cost far below that neces- . sary to maintain a Home Guard. The added policemen would help handle the State’s ever-increasing traffic problems, too, the .Republicang say. Their bill to -enlarge the: force, thus permitting the scuttling of the Home Guard bill now before the Senate Military Affairs Committee, was recommended for passage today by the Finance Committee, only 24 hours after its intreduction.

Adds 100 This Year

It would provide for the addition of 100 men immediately and 100 more next year. Favorable action was taken by the Finance Committee after Senator Albert Ferris (R. Miiton), chairman, asserted that “it would be a folly to attempt to create a Coxey's Army (referring to . the .Home

- Guard) with no real emergency in

sight. “We are sure the Governor would say that he wouldn't call out the Home Guard for labor trouble,” Senator Ferris .added. “This bill to provide for more State policemen is the answer to those who are clamoring for Home Guard units]. because they believe Hitler is knocking at our door.”

Units Already Formed

Senator Ben Herr (R. Lebanon), chairman of the Senate Military Affairs Committee and a member of the Finance Committee, said the Home Guard bill now before his committee would be left “untouched” for some time, He said he did not know what would happen to the Home Guard units that have been formed under an executive order issued by former Governor Townsend. “They weren't ‘authorized by the|_ Legislature,” he explained. Senator Herr read telegrams to the Finance Committee favoring enlargement of the State Police force as a Home Guard substitute. They were from Mrs. James L. Murray, Indianapolis, president of the Indiana Congress of Parent-Teachers Associations; Mrs, George Jaqua, Winchester, state president of the Federation of Women’s Clubs, and Paul Hoffman, South Bend, presi“dent of the Indiana Binte Traffic and Safety Council.

Compares Expense

Senator Herr estimated that it “nearly $1,000,000” to properly uniform and outfit the 3300 Home Guard soldiers proposed by the Adjutant General's office and|™ that it would take only $350,000 to increase the State Police force by 100 men this year. He explained that the increase in the police force would cost the public nothing since the department is operated with gasoline tax revenue while the Home Guard fuhds would have to come from the State: general un

CAT SCRATCHES GIRL,

(THEN DIES OF RABIES

When a cat scratched at the door of the home of Miss Mary Newton, 5613 E. Washington St., Sunday| =

morning, she let it in to feed it.

She picked it up and started to pet it. Suddenly the cat, in a convulsion, scratched Miss Newton and dropped to her feet—dead. Charles E. Newton, Miss Newton's father, took the cat to the State Veterinarian’s office, where an examination revealed the cat died of ‘rabies. Mr. Newton said his daughter began receiving Pasteur treatments immediately.
