Runaway Boys

Billie explained that they hed tried to register at the Y, M. C. A but were told, “you're too young. » So ‘we went across the street to a hotel, he said, and asked for bargain prices “because we Were s0 young.” “We both stayed four nights or four bucks,” he said. Dick chimed in with an answer to a question about the “loop” (Chicago's business district). “Sure we rode it all over town and walked under it for blocks,” he said. The police . were puzzled until they learned that the boys both thought the “Loop” was the elevated train, The boys said they had run away from. home Wednesday after finishing classes at Jefferson Junior High School. They took a bus for Chicago “because they wanted to see the big city.” Billie said he had taken $30 from his penny bank which he had been “filling since I was a baby,” but later amended the story to say he had “borrowed” $10 from his} mother. He said Dick only had $1.50 to spend after paying his bus fare “and I had to buy his eats.”
