up in food
costs, rent and fuel, according to a Labor Department
survey.
The depatiniert’s statistics reveal that food costs,
clothing and rent here are above the average in 33 of the
nation’s largest cities and that less money is spent on
fuel,
electricity and ice, house furnishings and miscellaneous items than in the average large city. On the whole, living costs here are above the average—for every $102 [ppent
here, the average city spends Between Sept. 15 and Dec. 15 ‘(when the survey was taken) food costs in Indianapolis rose 2.2 per cent, clothing costs declined . per cent, house furnishings in- . creased .1 per cent, miscellaneous costs were .8 per cent higher, and fuel, electricity and ice were 2.7 per cent higher. The Labor Department says .food costs in the nation went up Roger Budrow chiefly because of price increases in butter, vegetables, milk, four, cured pork and lard. Increased cost of purchase of automobiles, tires licenses, taxes and insurance on autos boosted the “miscellaneous” jtem the most. Many housefurnish‘ings were affected by recent price increases in lumber and upholstery.
jncreases in coal and coke prices were the usual seasonal kind. That disposes of everything but rent. Rent costs in Indianapolis went up 9 per cent in that
pared to a .3 per cent gain in the average city. The Labor Department made a special survey of rent and found that lower-rent homes carried the brunt of the increase. A 1 per cent increase was made here in rent for homes renting under $30 and rent was changed on 8.8 per cent of these homes. Homes that rent for $30 to $50 had ‘an average-increase of .2 per cent ‘and 3.8 per cent of this class of dwelling had its rent changed. A very small change was made in the rent of homes in the $50 a month or more class. $n Bn RCA PRESIDENT David Sarnoff says radio tubes can “be made to respond to light, color, to a wisp of smoke, to the faintest sound, the feeblest touch. Some day we may be able to make them respond to taste and to smell. Only in the human brain do we approach such a delicacy of perception and such quickness of action. Yet no human brain can carry on these operations from hour to hour, or from day to day, with the certainty of these devices,” ~ : 2 =a 9 CHEERFUL DEFENSE item:

WHEAT PRICES BREAK SHARPLY
Corn Rallies in Last Few Minutes of Trading At Chicago.
CHICAGO, Feb, 1 (U. PJ). Wheat futures om the Boara of Trade started the day steady to easy, but broke sharply subsequent= ly with the May delivery entering new low ground since early in Oc= ' tober and new crop contracts estab= lishing new seasonal low marks, Other grains also showed weakness. Wheat closed off 1% to % cent, May 813% @815%c. Corn rallied in the final minutes to close un= changed up to % cent; oats fine ished off % to up % cent; rye un= changed to up % cent and soy beans recovered all of the loss to close up % to 3% cent. Short cov= ering operatoins featured the clos ing trades. ; Thin buying interest in the mars ket, receipt of further moisture in the Southwest, and recent talk of somewhat freer offerings of cash wheat in the Southwest continued to have a bearish effect on ‘the market.
