ARMY TO GET A500 LIGHT SGOUT CARS

WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 (U. P.). —The War Department expects delivery of 4500 new lightweight reconnaissance cars by May 7 from three automobile manufacturers, it was learned today. The small cars will supplant motorcycles. The cars, being built by the Ford Motor Co., Detroit; Willys-Over-land Motors, Inc., Toledo, O. and the American Bantam Car Co., Butler, Pa. will cost more than $4,000,000. Officials said original specifications of the cars had been changed so that the vehicles, which combine some features of trucks and tanks, will weigh more than 1000 pounds. They will have a load rating of one-quarter ton, be armed by a machine gun and carry four men. It was said that the Ford contract provides a unit cost of $925 each with deliveries to be completed by April 15; the Bantam order is $942 each with deliveries to be completed April 30. The Willys contract is for $949 each with deliveries to be completed May 7.
