The halftime score was: Whiting, 13; Horace Mann, 10, and it ended: Whiting, 41; Horace Mann, 30. Frankfort was the evening’s high scorer, pouring 62 points to South Bend John Adams’ 22. All Eyes on Cubs’ Rookie

‘| Coast League.

NEW YORK, ‘Jan. 22 (U. P)— It'll be five weeks from today before the major leagues call out their pitchers and catchers for advanced spring training but talk already has swung around to nominating Lou Novikoff, Chicago Cubs’ newcomer, as the likeliest rookie of the year. ’ Novikoff, ‘who hits like Joe DiMaggio and fields in the best Babe Herman tradition, comes up to the Cubs wtih an impressive slugging record and a talent for eccentricity surpassed only by the personality of his future teammate—Dizzy Dean. The Cubs have been selegated to the National League's second division for 1941 by most of the baseball oracles but if Manager Jimmy Wilson can steer Novikoff’s batting talent close enough to his remarkable minor league record—never under 350 in any league—his club may be the surprise of the year. Certainly Rookie Novikoff will be. Novikoff was one of 13 children in the family of two Russian immigrants and played softball under the sobriquet of Lou Nova, One of his feats in over six years of softball was a 352-foot homer with a 13-inch softball. That led to a trial with Los Angeles of the Pacific

Nicknamed “stupor-man” for some of his early fielding antics, Novikoff cut a wide swath through the batting averages to become the minors’ batting “super-man.” With Ponce City he tore into Western Association pitching for an average of .351; soared to .367 with Moline in the Three-I circuit in 1938 and next year led the Texas League with 368. . . Lose Riska SOUTH BEND, Ind., Jan. 22. —Loss. of Capt. Eddie Riska,: high-scoring forward for an indefinite period, will hamper Notre Dame’s chances of keeping a five-game winning streak alive against Michigan State here Saturday night. The Spartans, who broke winning chains of Creighton, Long Island, and Temple, have won six straight themselves. Riska was injured in the first half of the Syracuse game at Syracuse, which Notre Dame won, 54 to 49, in overtime, Monday night. X-rays on his return revealed a fracture in his left foot. It is believed he will be unable to play for four weeks.

climbed to .452 with 61 hits on the coast. :

Last, year he practically took the Coast League apart in 174 games. He drove in 171 runs, scored 147, hammered out 259 hits, including, 41 homers, six triples and 44 doulles for an average of .363. Meanwhile his fielding improved steadily. Off the records, he can hit any kind of pitching and can't miss as a big leaguer.

Kautskys Freeze Out the Rens

Times Special ANDERSON, Jan. 22. — “Turn about is fair play” was the motto of the Indianapolis Kautskys as they stalled the final three minutes to down the New York Renaissance, 49-48, in a professional basketball game here last night. , On the previous night at Indianapolis, the famed Negro aggregation had “camped on the ball” during the final moments of play, winning a 53-49 decision over the Capital City boys. So, in last night's contest, the winners, after a nip-and-tuck battle that saw the lead change hands several times, gave the Rens a demonstration of stalling, Indiana style. The losers nabbed an early lead, but the Kautskys rallied to gain a 19-18 edge at half time.
